Repairing Bumper Side Mounts

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question (hopefully) - how do people repair the side mounting points for the bumpers? Particularly the front bumper? Do you try to restore it back to the original flimsy design or make something up?

The flimsy boss that the rubber buffer fits into, the one attached to the front wing.

This bit (attached)

TBH I have no idea how the front bumper mounts work on a GTi, as I didn't take the bumper off my first two, and on my current one the joint was completely fubar.

If you mean the raised boss on the wing, its not used on a GTI.

The sliders as per Welshpugs post bolt to the bumper itself using a short bolt with the plastic rectangular head.

Then the rubber buffers with a tapped steel top hat go inside the slider. (http://205gti-nfp.co.uk/?page_id=2)

Finally a bolt from the inside pointing outwards goes through the corner stiffener bar, (http://205gti-nfp.co.uk/?page_id=5) and the wing, and then threads into the steel top hat and buffer.

Its quite a convoluted setup really.

Then I'm fairly certain mine can't have been mounted right, the bosses are severely rotten - although I took (the remains of) the mounts off so long ago now I can't remember for certain!

The rear one's aren't great either, in fact one has entirly rotted off (aftermarket wing), so my question still stands, albeit not for the front :)
