Wiper Stalk, Where To Get One?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Recently been having issues with my indicator stalk, where the headlights were occasionally being iffy. Did the usual process of sorting out the earths on the headlight area, decided to ditch the original setup and use crimped on ring terminals. Looks less of a faff in future too I hope.

However, noticed that the full beams weren't coming on at all with dipped beams on. Looked like this was a common problem enough that replacement was the only solution. Did so and things look ok now.

This time(!) however, I've noticed the washer jets are a little intermittent. Sometimes the washers work fine, sometimes, nothing happens. Usually it's a case of wiggling the stalk, or putting it on wipe then it appears to work.

Sounds to me like another case of the stalk going awry. However, this time, I've found that I can't simply buy a new one. Either that or I'm not looking hard enough?

I bought a second hand one off the internet auction site, only to discover that there's actually quite a few distinctions. Wanted one with a rear wiper, but now discover there are some without the intermittent function, instead having a misting function (flick it upwards).

I'm debating whether to use that just for the sake of it, but it seems strange that these seem hard to find. It's a similar nightmare with the heater blower motor; I would love to buy a new one, even if it's ridiculously expensive, but they simply don't exist.

I'll keep looking, but I guess this might be a note to start hoarding these intermittent wipers if you have them.

Had a similar problem with mine a few years ago. It's relatively straightforward to fix the switch yourself, given patience and care. You need to carefully lever the retaining tabs away, whilst taking care not to let the whole thing spring apart...which it will do, given half a chance. It's then a case of cleaning internal contacts. I seem to recall having to bend a brass contact strip out of the way for the contact I particularly wanted to clean. Then it's simply a case of holding it all together, and bending the retaining clips back. I found mole grips ideal for that....but take care, you need to adjust them to a strong enough setting that they will set the tabs in place with no give, but not so strong as to crack the plastic casing.

That looks to be the indicator stalk, not the wiper. Having said that, I spent £41 on my new one, so that one is quite a damn good price. Oh well.

That pic at the very least looks like it's a wiper with the rear functionality. I think the way to check whether it has an interval wipe function is to look at the back of it at the connector. It should have 7 pins on the long one? I have 5 on the one I bought without.

Why not just buy a new one? http://www.desboroughdesigns.co.uk/#!product-page/ccq7/78fb5576-5690-18fe-059a-b1114981e1c9

They're not genuine for that price surely? Worth a go at that price if they look the part though I guess.
