Help Please - Removing Battery

Recommended Posts

d71h1k

Apologies guys for a stupid question. I have recently bought a 1.6 GTi and need to replace the battery because it's goosed, but I'm confused about how to disconnect the negative terminal and don't want to do something disastrous to the car before I've had chance to properly drive it.

I've attached two pictures (one of the engine bay and the other of the owner's manual). To remove the battery I would have thought all you do is disconnect the negative post (at number 1 on the first picture), then disconnect the positive and lift the battery out - bingo. However, in the manual (second picture) it suggests that you have to disconnect the negative earth too, at number 2 of the first picture. My question is (and sorry it's a stupid question but this is the first time I have owned a GTi) - does it matter which one you disconnect first?

Thanks in advance.

You don't need to touch the wire labelled #2 in your photo - that's the earthing wire for the brake pad wear sensors.

The picture is simply suggesting that you place the jump lead there if trying to jump start the car - I'm not entirely sure I agree with that either though, as I would have thought that if you're going to put it somewhere other than the negative terminal that you'd put it on the engine block or gearbox as the closest point for the starter.

If you're replacing the battery then simply disconnect the negative and positive battery terminals, remove the dead battery, refit new one, reconnect battery terminals :)

I think you are misreading the manual, overcomplicating thiongs.

remove clamp bolt, remove negative terminal clamp, remove positive, reverse process.
