406 Driveshafts - Thick Or Hollow

Recommended Posts

dynacord

So, I'm planning to put some stronger shafts and CV joints from 406 TD/HDI on a Mi16 gearbox.

The splines from both sides are the same 24/25. I understand there are two types - hollow and thick. Does anybody have an idea to which year of production are used the thick ones? I guess the hollow ones are for the later models.

I guess 307 shafts/CV joints are basically the same, but different length.

cheers,

Alex

Just a clarification:

I will be using rose jointed wishbones (apprx. 30mm longer), this is the reason I need longer and stronger shafts.

afaik only non abs will have the solid shaft, hdi will certainly have larger hollow shafts as they're all later cars with abs as standard, also anything diesel more than 90 bhp will have an ml gearbox so the inner cv's are not compatible.

not certain if the outer cv on a 307 is the same o.d as a 406, but splines either end will be.

So, after some research it turns out solid shafts have been made for models before 2000, the ones using BE box should be 2.0 16v, 2.0 turbo, and 1.9td. (not sure about 2.1 td)

I've found some very cheap 2.0 16v shafts and want to put new 2.0 hdi CV joints, think they should fit on the outer splines of the bar itself.

I think Sandy has used similar on Colin's car, but not sure which shafts and CV joints.

Yes, sorry, 2.0 turbo is ML, too.

Do you know if the inner CV joint is changeable, or it comes with the bar in one piece?
