Omp Roll Cage.

Recommended Posts

I've just acquired an OMP cage for my 205 and just wondered what the general opinions of them are?

From reading the ID card that it came with I think it's a GABBIA? 105/126 model. The serial number is 12226.

I'm going to trial fit it then get it shotblasted and powder coated or painted to smarten it up a bit, whilst it's blasted I want to modify it so it has a X at the rear rather than one diagonal and incorporate harness bars.

Is there a specific material to use or is it a case of match the diameter and thickness of what's there? Was also wondering whether MIG or TIG should be used? I'll be getting it done by an engineering firm so either or will be possible!

Have hopefully attached some pictures.

Cheers

What are you going to use the car for ? I ask as that's an FIA homologated cage so modifying it will invalidate the homologation. If that's not important to you then 40x2.0 CDS tube, mig'd will be fine (but will likely affect resale value) although you could use seamed tube if you wanted. For motorsport under MSA rules, you can add the harness bar you want but not the extra diagonal - this would have to be CDS tube, either 38x2.5 or 40x2.0. Again MIG would be fine.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for the reply mate, The car will only be used as a fast road toy/occasional track day so I guess modifying wouldn't matter too much.

Not too bothered about resale value to be honest as the cage owes me practically nothing (under £100) and I don't intend on selling the car.

If I were to put harness bars in I assume the height of these would be dependent on the seats that I go with as I assume they would want to be the same height as the cutouts on the seats?

Ideally the harness want to exit the back of the seat at a 10 degree downward angle.

Problem with putting harness bars in OMP cages is that the rear stays are too close together meaning your belts will end up on the piss towards the centre of the car, personally that would bother me.

As above - slightly downwards is best for belt angle.

you might be able to get a straight enough line for the harnesses if you attach eye bolts to the harness bars rather than wrap them around the tubes, does mean a bit more work.

Whats involved with the eyelets? Weld on or bolt through with a spacer in the tube? I guess harnesses with clips/hooks are readily available or can clips/hooks be bought and use any harness?

Threaded insert welded into the tube. Screw eyebolt in.

Most harnesses I've come across come with clips for attaching to eyebolts. The odd one has been directly bolted in but they are definitely the minority.

And

I put a harness bar on the main hoop a u-shaped one as the msa told me there is no way you will get one to work on the rear legs unless you cut the tunnel and move the seats in but you would need about 50mm inwards on both seats, you are not supposed to alter the cage but I did years ago and never had any issues I done it so it looked correct using omp tubes etc, next car won't have a omp cage tho

And

Some thing looks odd on that cage too if it's omp normally they have a 50mm main hoop. If it's just track days etc then cut the rear legs off and just remake the rear so it takes a harness bar,

Mine is 11year old so guess it's older than that then?

Date on the document looks like '91 to me. Plus the 40x2 box is ticked with no option for anything bigger so fits with the pre '95 rules.

Maybe consider padding the cage out well if you're going to drive it on the road without a lid.
