Water Leak In Engine Bay.

Recommended Posts

iPlod999

As above had a leak.

Took off air pipes and AFM. Just to the left of the AFM bracket is where the leak was coming from.

On the top of this is what looks like a valve with a cap on similar to a tyre valve.

Just below is a bigger black cap that had popped up a little and that is where the water was coming from. Pushed the captain and leak gone.

However, I noticed the there is thread under the larger black cap. Should this be a screw on cap rather than one that can be pushed up and down?

It's the first time in 5 years that this leak has shown itself so hopefully won't reappear for a while.

Cheers.

A picture paints a thousand words...

The only thing that I can immediately think of that sounds like what you're talking about is a late 405 plastic thermostat outlet with the outlet for the heat exchanger... but that shouldn't be fitted on a 205!

I knew I should have taken a picture.

Excuse the middle finger. Cap just above.

Think that's just a blank/bung for the unused outlet. Surely a hose clip to secure it will do the trick.

As Anthony said its a 405 thermostat outlet.. not sure how it has held in place for that long!

If its a rubber cap you may be able fit a jubilee clip around it to secure it, although you can buy capping bungs if the current one is plastic

Yup, confirms my guess - that's a 405 type thermostat outlet that shouldn't really be fitted to a 205.

That said, if you put a jubilee to secure that pipe blank in place then it'll be fine - that's how countless 205 Mi16 installations are done - although the "proper" way is to replace it for the type without the extra outlet on it. With no jubilee on there I'm actually surprised that the bung stayed in place and leak-free for as long as it has.

As it goes thermostat is only a year old. Had it replaced along with new radiator, BM water pipes etc.

Looks like the garage I used pit on a 405 part!

Jubilee clip for now until I can get a bung.

Thank you Anthony.

The thermostat itself is underneath that outlet, so unlikely the garage would have replaced the outlet at the same time unless it broke on removal.

I guess it's possible it was like that from the factory as I've seen similar on later XU's in 306's etc with that type of outlet and a bung fitted as standard, but not personally seen one on a 205 that hasn't shown clear evidence of having been removed/replaced previously.
