205 Gti Prices?

Well, I feel suitably educated in Japan's roadbuilding strategy at least

OK, this is a very interesting car for me for a number of reasons.

I've had a look at the underlying data for this car and the country code is '39' which I don't know, yet Japanese cars are '79'... hmmm.

I do have data on a flock of '39' 205 GTi's (1.6 and B6, DFZ and DKZ) over the vintages which are LHD and the later ones have A/C, S/R and P/S as per this vehicle and it is defined as a 'HOT' climate as is Japan.

So it makes me think that '39' indicates a LHD version for the Japanese market but this goes against what I have observed so far.

I have read that in the earlier days of 205/309 importation that there was a mix of LHD/RHD models and that the LHD did attract a certain caché, but I thought by the time this vehicle was released it was all RHD.

So some aspects of this car that are specifically Japanese is the control box near the PSA compliance plate which is for the additional exhaust gas temperature sensor as fitted to Japanese cars and I guess the owner literature although that could be purloined from elsewhere.

The aspect of the 'bulged' bonnet and wrong paint on the flitch plate is troubling. That bonnet only existed afiak on the XU5M3/Z engines as fitted to the Euro Autos and the Australian Si and also the early Spanish 205s with the Poissy (E1, G1, Y2 etc) engines.

Curious.

Also, the fact that the leather appears to be of a higher quality grain on the seats and the steering wheel that is a very lighter shade than should be (clearly highlighted on the steering wheel outer to centre), suggests it has been re-upholstered recently and that the great looking exhaust is just because the back box has been replaced with the remaining looking all rusty from the front. The sound proofing is missing from the underside of the bonnet but it at least you may get a free Japanese spider web and possibly spider if purchased (the photo of the underside rear shows it on the damper).

Things are really not adding up.

OK, so to continue the "Spot The Difference" game.....

1 - Steel spare wheel? I appreciate there may be regional variances but didn't the GTIs usually have a full size spare alloy?

2 - Black beam. Shouldn't it be beige/yellow beam tube?

3 - Colour looks odd for Sorrento. I know it's an arse of a colour so capture on photo but every one I've seen looks dark green or black or somewhere in between. This one looks like it has a hint of blue in some photos.

Now that aside, I think you'd have to be a fruit loop to pay £20k for this. It doesn't have the originality to appeal to investors, and nobody over here (of sane mind) is going to buy a LHD example at this price compared to a mint RHD one. It looks nice and there may be nothing at all dodgy about some of the irregularities, but please £20k?!! Pffff.

Noticed all that, the actual shape of the bolsters is also a give away, and the fact the material is worn and the leather is like new.

But you get a partially painted petrol tank, and a black beam where you can see the yellow poking through here and there, a steely spare wheel, and of course a new fag lighter!

Ronson premier no1 has far more class than a Zippo :-) and fits better too.

That "Jap" one also has my pet hate of people putting the petrol cap on upside down!

Wankers.

My OCD has kicked in about the parking of the rear wiper.

But I say good luck to them - blatant lies aside (which is a no, no) if any dealer is able to persuade someone with more money than sense to pay an astronomical price for a mediocre car then I'd call that pretty shrewd. They are in the sales business after all - they're not enthusiasts and we shouldn't expect them to behave as such.

Price of parts aside, and no I'm not looking to sell, I'm pleased the value of my asset is increasing. Hopefully at the same rate as I'm devaluing it !!

I'm with you on the retrim. I was looking at the rear seats, and they don't look right. The parallel stitching in the back pieces is not original.

As for the colour, I wondered if it might be Mayerling green, (aka Oberon (?) Green), which is a shade or so lighter than Sorrento.

Certainly looks like someone has tarted it up for top money, and I'm sure someone will pay it - because on the face of it, on the top and inside, it does look very nice, that you can't deny.

But like I think GLP mentioned, I think the shame of it is that it is being passed off as an amazingly original example, which it clearly isn't. If it's had a retrim, respray, whatever, then actually that's fine, but at least be honest about it. Don't try and pass it off as something it isn't because anyone who knows their onions from their shallots (us lot) will see straight through you.

I think also, something that retains some originality, and a level of patina, is more interesting and is more valuable. I'd rather have that car with its slightly worn original seats, a few stone chips, and a slightly scabby underside. It's part of the car's history, provenance, and appeal - particularly with something so unique and special to start with. Take that away, and you remove some of the interest of the car's history.

Great and interesting opinions as the worlds best fast production hatch back get's a wee bit more expensive each day...

Totally understand GPL's comments about dealers... ultimately that's what they do, try to make people feel good about themselves and hence sell cars to them...

Don't understand the fascination with the LE colours, Miami and Sorrento or Lazer... otherwise they would have been there to begin with, load of s*ite... best colour is steel grey, it completely defines the car as it was designed to be.... white, red, graphite, black, anything apart from those awful LE colours...Miami possibly being the exception, love it or hate it...

Also not agreeing with GPL's about ordinary drivers/people today buying one for the sake of roasting it.... that ship has sailed a long time ago and rightly so... if you weren't there to buy one, then tough s*it... go and buy something else to destroy instead (16v Clio) ... you are not nearly deserving of it, and mostly you won't understand or fully appreciate it anyway... look after it, cherish it, polish it, love it... don't let go of it unless you have to.... even then.... remember the previous lessons from history ;-)

Then you misunderstood me. I'm not going to read back to what I posted but vaguely recall I may have used the word "hoon". I wasn't suggesting people buy 205 GTIs to thrash the living s*it out of them and abuse them. But I am saying that it's a shame if prices are sky rocketing to the point were ordinary people like you, me and most of the members on here can't afford to buy one to enjoy. Surely it's more a shame for them to end up in someones collection to just be looked at rather than enjoyed on the road for what they are.

If you are against "hooning" then what would you prefer, that owners just use them to gingerly creep down to the shops and back? Or do we just have a different interpretation of what hooning is?

Maybe a shame, maybe not, but its happening and for nice examples the boat has already sailed. You only have to look at the sudden surge of interest in the 306 GTI6, as it is now the affordable for the common man, 15yr old hot hatch, to have for a bit of a thrash round.

It's not a shame if you have one, it is a shame if you don't but want one.

I only have a gripe with the situation because it feels like values are being unnaturally escalated by speculators.

I've now missed the boat with Mk1 Cortinas and splitscreen VW panel vans (have wanted both since I can remember), but glad I fulfilled the dream of owning a 205 when I did, and that was only 2 years ago.

What's next to sky rocket I wonder.. Think I might buy an EP3 Civic Type R and tuck that away - better than money on the bank..?

Yes the prices are rising. But it isn't unnatural! It's totally natural as the cars reach the time where the folk who wanted one 20 yr ago but didn't have the money now do have the money. Add in the pathetic interest rate and it makes total sense for investors too if they buy carefully. To me the folk that want to worry are the old boys with the 60's TR's and MG's. No one in my age group is remotely interested in old British sports cars, they are also booming in money but I think at some point they may catch a cold as in my mind there just won't be the buyers out there for them.

Back in 1992 (upper sixth) I was going to buy a split screen bus; 2k it was and I didn't have the money.

I also had eyes fro a 1275gt mini my neighbour was selling £360!

Hindsight is wonderful thing.

Look at air cooled Porsches, £12,000 ten years ago for a 911T, £80,000 now.

Big Citroens are the way forward, CX or XM. We've got a CX........

I think any old ford will increase in value- that's why I'm tempted to buy the cougar sat at my work place. The bloke wants £120(scrap value). Yes its not a flash car, not very powerful but there aren't many left. Every time I think I will buy it I find something else wrong with my 205 that requires immediate expenditure!

I did say to the wife I'm thinking of selling it but apparently I've spent too much money to sell it now....Oh what a shame!

Tom, if you've read any of my previous posts on this subject you'll understand the point I'm making. The rise is natural, yes, but we are going through what I see as an artificial spike because of a sudden interest and sellers trying to jump on a bandwagon to achieve sale prices that in many cases are just not justifiable. That will settle down eventually I hope. And I'm sure this phenomenon isn't restricted to 205s and happens to plenty of classics etc, but I don't own or have a close interest in any other cars (and their values) so it's lost on me. I see it happening to the 205 and it's just bugs me, that's all.

Yes I get what you are saying, I just don't agree it is artificial or un natural. It was inevitable that a car that over the years has been described as iconic etc so many times was bound to sky rocket. In my opinion the only artificial thing was how cheap they were for so long, even compared to contempories, Golf GTI's and Escort Turbos for years were double and more compared to average 205 GTI pricing.
