205Xs More Power, Factory Look.

I've recently bought an xs which was showing its 25 years of use. As I go through and refresh it, I'm replacing some parts with uprated items, shocks, bushes, gear linkage etc

 

Now I'm after a bit more poke. I'm after a 205 that looks like it came from the factory, in the same way that Peugeot developed the euro rallye.

 

Would I be wasting my time with a lumpy cam and head skim, leaving the rest of the induction side as standard?

 

Where can I focus to get more power? Drivability on the road is important to me so nothing to extreme.

 

Any thoughts?

hi, if the engine is an 1.4 XS ( 80 hp) you don't need to change the cam cause it has allready good timing ( at all rpm 's ) what you Can do: search a 1.6 8v engine, take everithing off, and start building it with your 1.4XS parts ( the head , carburation...) put an electric fuelpump ( special for carburator engines ) and .. GO if you still want some more, go searching for a carburator from a 405 1.6 ( XU) it is allmost the same , difference: the 2nd valve is the same diameter as the first and it can give more fuel ;) than you can put an axhaust and make a good flow for your intake that should make 120-135 horse power i think if you still want more, go double webers, but than your'e factory lmook is gone and the consumption goes high :)

An uprated cam, 4-2-1 exhaust manifold, larger carb jets, and a k&n/pipercross filter will give a very noticeable difference.

I'm just finishing adding a 1.6 block to this combination for a bit more power :)

I heard the standard exhaust system flowed pretty well. How much effect did the 4-2-1 have?

Standard centre section and backbox aren't too bad, but the standard manifold and downpipe are not much good. A 4-2-1 is arguably one of the best ways to squeeze some extra power out of a TU, they're well known for responding well to 'bolt on' mods.

It's a very noticeable difference in power and responsiveness in my experience

I found one in Italy for about 400e. Made the order and went to payment. No option to pay.... Received an email saying there was a mistake and the price should have been £400 plus 20% plus import duty plus postage...... did I still want to buy it?!

I am very interested but also pretty broke right now. I think if you buy 4 you get a bulk discount but shipping was about 70 euros. Worked out about £188 all in just ordering one. Had the same idea, order 10 sell them on ebay sure they would sell for 300 but not got the capital lol.

 

Not sure why they are so cheap as pretty much the same manifold for the rallye is 500 euros!

 

They seem to sell inlet manifolds for twin 40's but I think they are for the euro rallye which might have a different bolt pattern to the xs im not sure, was going to get my friend who speaks french to contact them.

The euro rallye (TU24) definitely has a different bolt pattern on the inlet side to the TU3 head. The TU24 inlet manifold also has the bolt pattern on the carb side the opposite way up to twin 40's because of the anti-vibe plates is uses.

The manifold in the picture looks identical to the CSC Marmitte ones that Macaroni on here had a group buy of about 8 years ago. I've got a Euro Rallye one and it really is well made, mines been painted with black heat proof stove paint and wrapped twice (damaged the wrap with an off road excursion) and hasn't rusted or cracked. The French have quite a few different types for Euro Rallye's in mild and stainless steel. It's a bargain at the price quoted. Only downside was the noise level when it wasn't wrapped, it sounded like someone hitting an anvil with a sledge hammer :)

It is a CSC I think looks identical also says csc in the address bar. Bps are an official distributor, found them by looking on the csc website for stockists.

I've got a friend that speaks French and will be using him to help me crack a deal on 5-10 (i'm sure the must be a small demand for these on ebay?) of these over the weekend hopefully.. I'll let you know what price i can get one over to anyone interested ^_^

Well they did come back to me with a quote in the end, once they'd amended their website to the fresh price of 630 EUR. My cost price to get them over here would now be £429.43 each, no thanks.

Totally agree with Welshpug, mine's as good as new after years of abuse. You only get what you pay for. Having said that I wouldn't buy one to put on a car where the engine didn't warrant the expense. There are quite a few French made inox manifolds for circa £600 now, but not sure if they are more fragile than mild steel.

a cheap one will be yes, though mostly due to poor design and manufacture than anything, a mild manifold will rust away and crack, where a SS will still be in one piece and can be fixed.

Thanks Welsh Pug, I would have gone stainless if there had been one available at the time. The CSC one with black stove paint and wrap still looks like new when it was unwrapped, although my car doesn't go out much in the rain or winter.
