Just Picked Up A Bit Of A Bargain, Not Quite A 205 But...

To add to my growing collection of oddities and rarities, to go alongside my yellow XRAD van, and my pair of tin-top Roland Garros's, I picked up this little gem for (almost) pocket change.

It's a '91 309 1.6 GRi which are apparently quite thin on the ground, about 13 in the UK or so I've been told.

71k miles, Central locking, PAS, electric windows, sunroof, and comfy armchair velour arse-sweat-inducing seats.

Few months MOT left to boot.

Spotted it for sale on Facebook monday, called dibs, booked a £30odd train ticket from Edinburgh to Middlesbrough for this morning, 4 hours on the train, picked it up, drove back across some of the nicest scenery The North has to offer, and loved every minute of it.

Runs surprisingly well for having sat since octoberish, engine is sweet and revvy, aside from an ever so slight jerkyness at low revs (I'll have to spend an evening thumbing through the XU section, with this being my first petrol XU)

Bit of a knock from passenger front shock area on right hand bends, will give the balljoints/bushes etc a once over tomorrow to see whats what.

Bit of wheel wobble around 70mph, so might get the wheels re-balanced.

Other than that, bit of a bargain :)

I only really wanted something to use for commuting for a few weeks whilst I sort out a smidge of welding on the van for the MOT, and finish off one of the Rolands engine swap. And this practically fell into my lap :)

Here's a pretty crap photo of it when I got home

How much did you pay? One of my customers has one and she's constantly trying to sell it me. She's had it from brand new and it's the same reg as my 205 (G plate). It's also the same colour (white). It's a 1.3 though.

Looks nice!

I used a 1.9d brown 309 for commuting one winter (my last winter in the UK 5 years ago!) was so good, comfy seats as you mention, and really quiet, quieter than any 205 or 306 I've had!?

They are impressively quiet, and nowhere near as rattly as a 205!

I had a red gri around 8 years ago, with the rear suspension that looked similarly lowered/collapsed!

Could it be the same one? I bloody loved it!

I just checked(old emails) and it isn't the same one, at least I hope not. Mine was G reg and I owned it from 2005 to 2006. It was on 107k miles.

That was what got me into peugeots way back when. It was as quick as my brothers 2.0 mi16 up to 55-60mph. We most definitely didn't find out on a dual carriageway in Bristol... The good old days! I paid £250 for it, so sadly they haven't been a great investment over the years, unlike 205 gti's.

For 300 that is a great car.

Saw that myself and thought it looked a good deal and I do like 309's... didn't go any further than that though as I'm currently on a self imposed ban on buying anymore cars until I've sorted/finished/sold the current ones!

This ones an H reg Jon_Bmw. I was quite impressed with the 0-70 acceleration, a convenient traffic light before the slip road onto the motorway gave me the perfect test spot :)

I think I should impose the same ban on myself Anthony, I've only just got rid of a shell that's been in the way for months, and now I've taken its place in less than a week :/

It fits in nicely with my longstanding rule of thumb, which is to not spend more than £500 on a car :)

I also saw this and wanted it badly - but I, too, share the same habit of not finishing projects before buying more.

I'm justifying it to myself because its giving me chance to sort out the van without having to stop after a few hours and drive it home/to work etc

not quite as bargainous as the £100 one DCC had, but it was a 1.9 D so you win there

That looks like a good car for the money. Always had a soft spot for the 309. If I had room to park one, I could be sorely tempted just to scratch the itch.

Swapped out the passenger wishbone today for a spare I had lying around. The one I took of was sloppier than a week old bag of chips! Feels much better now and the clunk has disappeared:)

Whilst I was down there I checked out the brakes, as they're a bit dull. Found out that it's got base model style girling calipers and solid disks. Strange choice for a 1.6 in my eyes, so I'm just pondering whether I should slap on my spare 1.6gti calipers and some 1.9 disks

Yep they all had solid disc's up front with base model suspension, I guess to keep the costs down with the trim level
