Little Filter In Oil Galley On Underside Of Head

Recommended Posts

Kitch

Hi chaps,

Ok, so let's just say (hypothetically speaking) that somebody was refitting a cylinder head to an XU9 8v (carb model) and forgot to fit this filter.

Would you say that person (apart from being an arse) would need to remove the head, scrap the new gasket and bolts and have to buy more, to refit this filter? Is it vital?

The car will do 1000-2000 miles a year, can be serviced yearly and won't be driven hard in the slightest. I've....sorry, the person has had the head cleaned in the industrial dishwasher and all that business. The lump's done 190k miles and will probably be rebuilt in the next 5 years or so.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't personally like to take the chance, you would be surprised how much crap can be left behind from just doing a gasket change unless your sure of the work that's been done. The filter stops s*ite from going into the cam shaft I believe. If it's your own car you could control how the oil is. But you only need 1 piece in the wrong area to start off problems.

The head bolts will need changing 100%

I'm also in a position to strip my head from the engine and it's done less than 100 miles since it was fitted, I,m changing both.

But I love my car and don't want a larger bill later down the road.

Miles

Leave as is, none of the Iron blocks use it and rarely seen in any 1.6 or 1.9 engine these days

So no conflicting information there then guys!? :P

I'll probably just leave it. If the later engines don't run it and many engines are currently running without it, then it's obviously not vital. As I say, the engine's done 190k anyway, so it'll be due a bit of an overhaul in the next 5 years or so (where it may only cover a few thousand easygoing miles).

Cheers

I'd also leave it as is. Lots I've had to bits are missing anyway. The 8v don't usually wear the cam and lifters especially anyway.

Ha! It's a BX 19GT, with 190k miles on that I'm in the middle of restoring for my 60+yr old Dad. If it goes above 60mph, I'll be surprised. It was only kicking at 75bhp on the dyno before I took it apart!

If miles and Tom says it's fine I'd be happy enough to take their advise and leave it out, when I removed mine it was in pretty bad shape, probably not doing anything at all.

But I'd still like one in personally, if I'd had a lot of work done to the engine.

16v engines don't have one and use more oil at higher pressure through hydraulic tappets.

The XU9J4 uses one. That's the stupid thing - I made a point of removing and cleaning the one in my 16v, yet forgot all about this one until I saw it in the beaker with all the plastic connectors for the oil feed pipe that goes on top of the head!

Pics and/or build thread please!

I told someone there were probably no GTs left only a few days ago and I'm glad to be proved wrong.

There are a few left. About 10 I think, though registered it's one or two. I know of two other cars with owners I know, plus a few more that have been known. I've also got a 1983 16TRS, of which in the spec I have it is probably in single digits too.

Thanks, I'll have a read through that. I had these as family cars growing up, after a CX there was a 1983 BX16RS then a 1985 19GT from '87 to '90 when it was replaced with a less good '90 19RD with a conventional dash.

I always assumed the electronic trip computer was a standard feature in GTs but as yours doesn't have one maybe they were options?

The GT was only made for 18months, and in that 18months there were two versions! The earlier one had no side repeaters, tweed seats, GT decals and the trip computer from the Digit model. The later one had the CX side repeaters, CX GTi fabric on the seats, less decals and no trip computer. We do have a couple so could fit one at some point, but technically it never had it.

What a blast from the past, I can remember going on a school trip in my headmasters car, it was an early BX so had the indicator etc switches as per your car pictures. I would have been about 6 or 7 years old at the time so 1986-7 so it was probably new or near new, I remember being fascinated as it was like a spaceship compared to any other car of the time I'd seen.

I read that last night in your build thread after I posted here, ours must have been an early one then, it definitely had tweed seats, not chevrons.

I remember the GT seemed so high spec compared to the 16RS which didn't even have a nearside door mirror, even though I had the same reaction to the 16RS as Tom when I first saw it, I was also about 5 or 6 and I definitely used the word 'spaceship'. Unfortunately the GT was much less reliable than the RS so it didn't last long, the 19RD that it was traded in for was boring but ran well for years.

My only other BX anecdote isn't as interesting. In 1990 my grandpa bought brand new from Bordesley Citroen near Redditch a BX 1.9 flat diesel auto in white. He was very pleased with it as it meant he didn't have to change gear any more and did 50 odd mpg.
