Driveshaft Wobble?

Recommended Posts

toolie72

Changed drivers driveshaft for a refurb gsp shaft, changed gator on passenger side at same time

Checked intermediate bearing housing ie hockey bolts are right, bolts holding it onto block are tight

Problem on left lock I now have badbad vibration-almost like wheels about to come off!! I've had the car for years and done shafts before with no probs at all-anybody got any words of wisdom?

Cheers Paul (who's had enough lying in the snow for one day!!)

Yet another s*ite shaft from GSF, it will almost certainly be too long and so is compressed up solid when you put the lock on. The vibration is the shaft cv bottoming out. As a test loosen shaft nut off, you should have at least 10mm plunge in the shaft when at rest.

Important, is the car standard? Suspension, ride height, top mounts?

Yeah standard, had car 20 years now so I've put it back the way it was when I bought it (£3300 in 1996!!)

I'll be pretty p@@@@d off if you're right-only problem I had was duff intermediate bearing, getting old and lazy so got recon shaft

Having said that I have not given old one back for exchange yet so if I have to take it out I can check lengths

Thanks for nut tip-it's so obvious/simple that it's genius (and I don't often give out praise)

Blooming cars fragile enough without incorrect parts/old farts like me fitting them

Oh well haven't said it for a while-aaaaargh

Been there and done it, swapping shafts outside the guest house in Germany whilst at the Nurburgring. Not saying I am definitely right but unfortunately there's half a bloody chance.

I don't buy many things from GSF these days. Certain bits are ok but driveshafts and anything in a VEtech box are not in that category.

I've had the same issues with JR shafts, dead within a matter of weeks. In my opinion due to the incorrect length although they dispute this. I keep sending them back, but it's a ballache that could be done without. There's a guy selling uprated shafts that use 306 joints I believe, and are around £200 a pair. I think that's going to be my next step

Annoying if that's the case-I'm a toolmaker to trade (long time ago) and you just don't make stuff exactly wrong and expect to keep your job-the amount of machining involved you think they'd have the correct drawing/specs to begin with-makes you wonder if it's even the right material

Wonder if shaft size tolerances are stretched to fit more vehicles ie same length shafts different cvs

I'm gonna try my outer section of shaft on the new inner section to see what happens-well when the 5 inches of snow has settled down-can't even take poor car out in it for a play boohoo
