With the sort of customers that go to bonhams auctions you may well get 15k plus for that. Do you mean that bonhams want to start it at 12k and expect it to make 16?

Hi. They are saying that they want to do a full page in their catalogue with a guide price of 12-16k. But to really drum up interest and get people bidding they want me to go no reserve. Which I don't think I have the balls to do. Speaking to a few guys on here and I may even hold onto it for a while.

That looks awesome - be good to see the finished pics. Did you use all new rubber seals throughout as well (boot, windows, blah blah blah)?

How is it running? All good?

Yeah looks lovely, and very very clean. Well done David.

Assuming you want it looking all round as it left the factory I "think" (others will confirm) i'm right in saying there are a couple of things under the bonnet that aren't as it left the factory if i was being honest/very picky (which a potential pug nut/buyer might notice).

But it looks grand, and again well done.

That's allot better than Factory finish ever was :) as the underside's where rarely painted properly (coloured depended as well) only over-spray so to speak and a few other minor details but it comes to the stage where do you use new later parts or cleaned original dated parts which will never look quite as good but to me makes for a original car

Worth noting you should never jack the car on the chassis section as it dents unless it's the angle of the pic, but overall good job

Nice restoration but why on earth would you consign it to an auction house? If you get lucky then someone after an "as new" car might snap it up OR you'll have several dealers bidding in it to add margin.

If you have to auction it then set a reserve and stick with it as believe me any classic auction house will bend your arm like mad if it gets close to reserve.

And for the record a lot of the low mileage cars floating around are nowhere near as minty fresh as the sellers are implying. And a lot of classic dealers don't know one end of a 205 from a teapot.

Bonhams auction don't like putting a reserve on anything under 30k it was just an option. I'm going to advitise it I think. I would love to keep it but the misses wants to move AGAIN. What do you think it's worth Andy?

Personally I think it is worth what anyone is willing to pay.

Andy where should I start in your opinion

Sorry for the delayed answer.

Based on what I've seen out there, I genuinely think you could start at £20k. You have some room to come down a bit and this is way better than some of the £15k cars out there. As Miles says, some of the car isn't original so it won't appeal to someone after originality at any price.

Some might disagree and that's fine but I'd always price a good 205 to give you room to come down to where you want to be.

Thanks for the advice Andy. Had an offer of 18k today from a car collector quite local to me. Heard about the car from a friend of mine. I am very tempted but part of me is thinking I haven't even advertised the car. Think I'm going to put the car on the market and see what it does. Does anyone know what the most money ever paid for one of these is? Be interested to know

£18k??!!!

Think I would take it if I was you, that's a lot of money for a 205.

First offer's the best offer - if you're happy with it take it, you could hold out for more and be stuck with it for a while..

Great job, by the way.

I know it's slightly different as what i'm posting is about an original, but there's a 1988 with 25,500 miles coming soon on the appreciating classics website. Out of curiosity i phoned the garage and he said that the car has not yet arrived and been prepared, but if it goes straight on 'as is' it will be circa £19,995. However, they might refurb wheels and do a few other things to get it absolutely top notch and test the market at £24,995.

My view would be that £18k should be your absolute minimum.

Somebody must be bloody stupid to offer £18k for that! Well actually if you're trying to sell a car like that, you're not likely to get offered £18k again tbh, not for a long time.

Looking at the photos a lot of stuff has just been sprayed over, not much attention to detail really, engine looks like somebody has been let loose with a few tins of hammerite and a load of random nuts and bolts have been used, the position of the ramp lifting points leaves a lot to be desired. the fronts are position in the exact place which causes them to collapse, which as far as I can see they have done in the past as they don't look to have been repaired either. It just looks like somebody has sprayed over the subframe without removing stuff from it, it looks like the badge pins have snapped off and been left in place, it's done 44k, it will have had 6 previous owners and if we're honest, I can't really see where 20k has gone in that. tbh if I paid any more than 5k for that I'd be slightly gutted.

So you should probably bite the guys hand off before he looks at the car up close for originality (where the money is).

No offence to you - The car is lovely and I like that you've spent some time, money and effort to create a good clean example, but it is not an original, near perfect nut and bolt rebuild.

Fully agree Dan.

Out of curiosity, what IS the actual cost of a full rebuild? Are people just trying to recoup labour costs by testing the market for 18k on a 10k rebuild?...

Like I've said before I take everyone's comments on board. these pics are not the finished car. Think it's a bit silly of you (Dcc) to say it's a 5k car. Maybe you could post a few picks of your car up so I could maybe rectify some of the things I have done wrong. Or in the case of the engine what Elliot ratalik of 3D Motorsport has done wrong. If I really needed the 18k I would take it but I want the car to be rite. I could send you my email like I did to Paul to help me get things spot on as this is my first attempt at a 205. I could show you some of my other competed restorations like my mk1 Gti and series one rs turbo.

I can send you picks of finished car and you could point me in the rite direction on some bits. These pics were August ish. I've redone a few things since. And your car must be something really special as you seem to no what your talking about.

I've just read your post again (dcc) and some of what you have said is border line a joke. get some pics of your car up (dc).... Sorry (dcc) ????

Lets not get into a "show me your car then" match - it will acheive nothing.

Dcc knows 205's inside out, so do alot of others on this forum and its the little details that make a great resto.

We could go on about prices all day.

As nice as any resto is, 18k is a hell of alot of money for a car that isn't quite at that level of collectability yet, in my humble opinion. Maybe in time, but not now.

Yes prices are rising but you only have to look at something like scottbartons miami that sold a year ago for 3500 - and that was stunning and had all new seals, trim, badges etc.

18k for me personally would have to be everything and i mean everything brand new which is easier said than done!

that being said looks like a lovely example and if you want to hold out for more do it - you never know.

There's 10k rebuild and a quickjet wash. It's really hard to tell from the pictures people have seen.

Yeah your rite I spoke to 4 star classics this afternoon and he's seen all my pics receipts etc and he's saying he would be at 18k ish if it were being sold by them. Don't no wether you have seen their website but he says his clients are going crazy over these cars at the moment. Thanks for all your input once again.
