What's A Near Perfect Nut And Bolt Resto 1.9 Gti Worth?

Recommended Posts

David1982

Hi all just getting towards the end of my resto on my 1.9 1990 cherry red gti. Gone to town with this one new everything more or less. Parts bought from farmer and main dealers across the world. It was a rust free car and lots and lots spent 20k ish to be frank. I know it's not worth that but I'd like some feed back on what you guys think on value of these cars in mint condition...

You need to speak to mrfirepro and Andy_C, who have had this very conversation.

A very subjective question. I think an original low mileage car will always be worth more than a resto. There are some silly prices on ebay, but they don't seem to be selling, as you keep seeing the same cars relisted.

Are you looking for a value to sell it, or for agreed value insurance purposes? Two very different things...

Yeah your right. Just wanted some expert advice really as I will be putting the car up for sale at the end of March. 4 star classics just sold one that wasn't quite as nice as mine same sort of history that was restored and mileage the same. Although my engine went to elliot at 3D Motorsport who builds 205 engines for a living so it's as new. The only bits on mine that isn't new is the interior. Spoke to them today and they had 12k for it. So I'm hoping for something similar. I've sent some pics of the car to bonhams auction house and they are interested in putting it in the good wood festival auction in June. Only problem is they won't let me put a reserve on it. So kinda scary.

The car will be for sale.

If its a full resto with glass out bare metal respray etc and full rebuild throughout then 12k might be acheivable IMHO. But I would want a pretty mint interior for that money as well personally!

Get some pics up!

the interior is like new very little ware to the bolsters etc all the leather still has a texture finish as dies the steering wheel. Carpets are mint and still a lovely red. I see your in ponty I'm not to far away I'm in Blackwood myself. Yeah the car owes me a small fortune. I'm trying but I'm literally useless on the computer and just joined so I'm going to learn how to do it any tips would be a help.

Why would you spend 20k on a car to then sell it immediately? for 12k?

Ah ok. I do that then. Is your car totally standed? Just asking because maybe you could bring it over one day so I can just tie up a few things I'm not sure on like a PAS pipe route and a few little things I've forgot. Only little details but want to get it 100% rite. I don't no how much you know about these cars but any advice would be great.

I've learnt a fair bit over my ownership but nothing like some if the guys on here, have a look at mrfirepro's build thread on here, I bet you find all you need on there, his resto is incredible !

Definately up for popping up one day though.

im hoping my car is worth more if I'm honest. Bonhams want to put it at 12k 16k no reserve. So just being a bit modist when I said something simalar to 12k. Just want to get a little feedback on wether now is the rite time to achieve 15k plus really. And to answer your question directly I have a misses that likes moving house so need the funds otherwise it wouldn't be going anywhere.

Yeah I seen his car at pug fest and I've seen his build thread. What a good job he's done. Yeah you can pop over for a look like I said any help is welcomed. I've never done anything with a pug until this car so I've picked it up with lots of time on the computer and farmer has been good with parts etc.

This car has been welded? And has had some work carried out. It's had less owners. But I don't see this car as close to mine. It's not as if mine was rusty and 100k plus before I started the resto but yeah your probs rite with regards to no reserve. Just looking for all kinds of advice

They've all been welded in the factory! Haha

Good luck with the sale, all it takes is the right person to see it, or two in an auction.

Looking forward to seeing pics of it ????

Miles

It's a difficult one and personal, I tend to look for original car's and not restored as they are worth more money at the end of the day and it's what I'm doing to mine when I get around to it, nothing new unless it has to be changed and as it was when made, it's all to easy to go over the top with painting things that never was when new etc but unless you know what your looking at not a huge amount of people know.

Value without seeing it first hand is difficult but I have quite a few people spend in excess of 10k on std 205's these days so around that

David,

Would be good to see some photos. Having completed my resto (thanks for everyone's kind comments) unfortunatley I would agree with Miles, the best money in the market is going to the mint, original, low mileage, low owners & loads of history.

Thankfully these are few and far between and over time will be completely taken up in private collections leaving complete resto's as the only available option. Then to attract the best money will depend on the quality of the restoration and the supporting documentation.

I'm not sure if you have replaced all your rubber items, but if you have it will be a real plus as it is now impossible to do a restoration and have all new rubbers.

Therefore if it was mine, I would be hanging onto it at all costs, as I feel there is potential in the future to realise all of your investment.

As for auctioning it with no reserve..in the word of the right honorable sir Clarkson...NO NO NO NO NO..... :D

Paul

PS - How on earth have you done a full resto without using this site.......I take my hat off to you

Hi Paul I take all your comments on board, and yes low miles low owner cars always fetch top money. But there's also buyers who like the look of brand new looking car. The more I read on values and all of your comments the more I think I need to keep the car a little longer to get absolute top money. Paul I'm more or less new all over other than carpet headliner and seat. Interior was so mint I didn't want to change it. I been taking pics of your posts and pictures since day one of my resto and saying to Craig that's the bit I need and sending him pics. Haha just never joined till the other day. I've tried to get pics up on photo bucket but can't do it. Worlds worst in the old inter web

I could email pics to you if you want a look. Mines cherry red too. I seen your car at pug fest and used that as the bench mark for mine. Big bug ask to get it where you are and a lot of money but I have tried my best. Tho your car is absolutely stunning mate.
