Causes Of Timing Belt Damage .....just Caught In Time....

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I replaced the belt on my rally car back in 2011 after it snapped and damaged the head.

I was checking the car over for the first rally of the new year and noticed the belt is fraying and there is splitting at the root of some teeth. This was a gates belt and it's only covered around 500 miles, albeit under harsh conditions. I have a piper vernier cam pulley fitted.

I'm going to renew the belt again, but surely a belt should last longer than this.

Could the piper pulley have a different profile to the belt causing premature wear. What else should I look out for?

Thanks

Gerard

It's done 5 years, most belts are rated to x thousand miles or 5-6 years regardless of mileage.

It's a rubber belt, they do de grade with age.

Have you got covers fitted, it's UV that does the most damage?

Yeah Tom, covers are fitted and car is kept in a garage (dark).

I'm just concerned that there's something else untoward that I've missed.

Check for damage on the cam pulley, if it has been dropped while not fitted to the car it may have burred the edge of a tooth
