Phase 1 1.9's (Circa Dec 86 To Dec 87)

Recommended Posts

Thought it would be useful to start a new thread on this but based on the responses from the Octane Article thread so far we have the following cars:

Anchorman - 12/01/87 - Graphite Grey

barneys66 - 07/04/87

Peteb - 01/10/87 - Cherry Red

Barryboy85 - 11/87 - White

Would be great to hear from anyone else who has one....

Title of the thread was meant to be 1.9's rather than 1.9S!

I've not loaded photos before so have spent a bit of time reading the rules and guidelines and you have to have 'Driver' status. As I haven't yet posted 30 plus times I'm still a 'Passenger'. I've tried to link to one of the pictures I have in my profile so hope this works....

Peteb lovely car... Looks near mint condition... That's how I want to get my phase 1 looking like... Eventually.

I'm in the middle of getting all my body work done at the moment... Shouldn't be to far off now... Just the usual places...I've only had my car for around 6 months... I'm pretty pleased with the purchase of my pug for the price I paid ... Evens tho it does need a little work..

I've also tried to up load photos off my phone, with no success .????

Pete that car is stunning - I'd be afraid to go anywhere near it !! Beautiful.

Can you guys use another site to host your photos, then just post the link - here's my slightly less original example (via Photobucket)

Thanks both. You're right much as i love driving her i'd be gutted if it got in a scrape and the originality gets lost. Tend to just go on short local journeys and to local shows.

Barneys is your still on the original engine or upgraded? I can see you have bucket seats... Are you ever tempted to change them back to original seats?

Pete is the waxol on the underneath of your car?

I would Pete but mine's a keeper - good luck with the search. Are you after another early one..?

Barry - no, it's going to stay modified but nothing irreversible, though the age is not really a consideration of mine (other than I wanted a Ph1).

Here's a link to my build thread which has lots more info, should you be interested.

Can we not have a phase 1 thread?? or would it be inundated with phase 1's

The reason i ask as i would imagine some peeps have the phase 1 1.6 as well on these years, including myself, but not 86/87

Hi erbs, when i started this thread my thinking was to try and get a sense of specifically how many members we might have with a phase 1 1.9, given they were only made for circa 12 months.

How many left.com tells us how many gtis are left for 1987 but it doesn't give the split by 1.6/1.9.

Perhaps you could a separate Phase 1 1.6 thread so we can compare?

Hi barneys66 - in answer to your question in your 9.02pm msg, i'll consider anything that is mostly original and has history that shows it's been looked after.

I've got a cherry Red 1.9, registered 27/04/1987.

Mine is modified as I use for hill climbing, but to be fair it was an absolutely rotten mess when I got it so I don't feel too bad about it not being original!

Looks good koti

General question to all - are people that hung up about early ones..? Does age have an impact on value, i.e. do they carry a significant premium..?

Just interested, mine is staying as is, and with me!

I think the age side of things has only really just come in... It seemed that most people wanted the phase 2 models ... More modern I suppose and the early phases 1s not so popular....and now it's gone full circle as there are less phase 1s than 2s making them more desirable .

Yes full history with it, Was owned by a music director in central London and it lived in a gated private estate and sold it to me after how much I told him it would cost to restore

Mines a one owner December 1987, full service history cherry red 1.9 GTI but it's the Phase 1.5 version, with original dealer plates and rear window sticker. Fully recommissioned over the last six months after 10 years "resting" in my dad's garage. Off for some paintwork in January then it'll be used for a short while and then put back away as I've a real TU24 Rallye which comes out every summer. I much prefer the Rallye for the lighter weight and revvy engine.

Virtually every time I get the GTI out onto the drive someone will walk up and reminisce about their youth and how they had one or were scared to death by someone else driving one.I've also had several serious punters wanting to buy it. That's been very useful evidence to her in doors who hates cars and thinks the GTI is not worth anything!

When my dad put it away in the garage it was fully serviced inc all new belts and fluids and it started first time on 10 year old shell super unleaded, although the valve stem seals had cried enough, but that only took us a couple of hours to fix with the tool "borrowed" from the local Pug Stealer.
