Ma Box Advice/noise

Recommended Posts

dobboy

Yesterday me and a freind fitted my TranX equipt MA box to my Saxo.

A new valeo 3-piece clutch fitted and everthing seems ok apart form a strange noise when the clutch pedal is pressed.

The noise sounds like a bit of a whispy whirring.

It was my freind who fitted the clutch stuff whilst i cracked on elsewhere.

He's 90% sure the clutch plate is fitted correctly, but we now have this element of doubt.

I think the noise sounds like the bearings on the release bearing, but because of this doubt i'm wondering if it could be the springs on the clutch plate fouling the flywheel bolt heads when the clutch is pressed.

The car got a quick 5 min spin when we were finished and everything seems ok apart from this noise.

My freind is gonna try put a bore scope thing down in the flywheel area today to see if there is anything untoward.

Anyone any ideas?

Can the clutch plate be fitted backwards? If so, would it have given up the ghost immediately? Or what would be the symptoms?

TIA

I spoke to someone and they thought if the clutch plate was on the wring way round it would be held off the flywheel and wouldn't work, or there would be almighty crunching, and probably is just a noisy release bearing, which is not uncommon.

Does that sound about right?

Yesterday, my freind and i changed another box, this time to his 106, this time Quaife equipt.

Fitted a new SKF bearing, and this time this one chatters with the clutch out.

100% sure everything is spot on.

Unbelieveable, two separeate boxes, two brand new bearings from different manufacturers, and two separate noises.

I'm inclined to think that the noise i hear on mine with pedal pressed is due to the grease (white) being dried out.

What say ye?

Yours sounds like the bearing to be honest. The plate on backwards would cause bigger issues.

The second one sounds like the sleeve the bearing sits on should have been replaced.

Thanks Rippthrough.

The second box was fully rebuild a week ago, but not sure if that little sleeve part with the triangular base forms part of the rebuild kit.

Yeah, i think mines is the bearing too, i'll run it for a bit and hope a little bit of heat/wear changes things, but i'm not hopeful.

Was a time consuming job doing them too.

My friend has cured his noisy bearing, by levering the clutch arm hard against the clutch, I assume this has clipped the bearing on to the forks better somehow?

one thing I noticed with his is that he has a self adjusting clutch cable (106), which is different to my Saxo's 8V and 16V.

As my clutch and bearing are brand new, is it unlikely/likely to cure itself when some mileage get's put on it? or could some cable adjustment cure it? my biting point feels a couple of inches from the top of the pedal, but i'm wondering if just now i'm currently pressing the bearing too hard against the clutch plate?

(as said previously, I think I can hear the release bearing ball race turning when the pedal is pressed).

Can someone tell me please, when the clutch pedal is out, does the release bearing touch the clutch cover, or would it further NS on the little shaft sleeve thing?

Thanks WP, do you think it's possible that when i'm putting the clutch to the floor the bearing is getting pushed in too much and causing a bit of strain on the bearing? And perhaps re-adjustment required? Even though my biting point feels ok?
