Plumbing Factory Remote Oil Filter And Upgraded Cooler

Recommended Posts

barneys66

My car came with lots of spares , including this water-heated remote filter and an upgraded cooler.

From what I've read I'm in two minds about using the heater, but like the idea of a remote filter to make life easier when changing (with twin 45s).

Question(s) are; as my car will be warmed up by the journey to the autosolo events / used in fairer weather only I think the heater is redundant, but can I run the remote with the water pipes blocked off (assuming it's just a heat exchanger) or, as hinted to by the diagram below, can that part be removed and the filter bolted straight to the plate?

Then, can I run this in series with the cooler and if so would you suggest pre- or post-cooler, or makes no difference, i.e. do what's easiest for the plumbing.

Finally, does anyone know where I can get the part that blocks off the sandwich plate at the engine..?

Thanks all

The heat exchanger can be removed. If you unscrew the filter then you'll see a hollow bolt through the middle of the heat exchanger (which isn't in the diagram for some reason). With that removed the filter will screw straight to the remote mount. You'll be left with the two water pipes that come from the radiator top hose. You can block them off, loop them together, or to keep things near you can swap for a normal top hose without the extra pipes.

As for running the oil cooler in-line with the remote filter than in theory it's better to put it in the return line from the filter back to the engine, as hotter oil will go through the filter more easily, In practice it probably doesn't make too much difference.

Perfect, thanks Ryan - this would be a retrofit so I already have the standard top hose thankfully.

Good logic on the series too, and every little helps so will do as advised!

Finally, do you know how I block off the old filter mount - is it an off the shelf plate..?

Cheers

I have the remote filter on my car. There is a special plate that screws on to the block to which the two pipes are connected. Part number 1 on the diagram. You don't block it off as such, you just need to attach the plate. Looks like the remote cooler already has the correct plate.

You need part numbers 1+3 from the diagram, as well as new seals. Try asking in the Wanted section, somebody will have them.

Thanks - photo angle is a bit deceptive here as the other side accepts the spin-on filter, so I'll try the Wanted section for Part no.1 as suggested.

If using in Short sprints etc then I would keep the exchanger, You'll have lunch and time between events at a guess and ditch the cooler, I only run the exchanger on mine but I rarer use the car in anger for over a minute at a time so getting the temps up is the main point

Ooh, good point for the autosolos being stop start, but what about possible track days..?

Is it worth considering a thermostat somewhere - is that even possible..?

I ran an oil/water exchanger on my tarmac stage car with no issues with oil temperature. The only reason I swapped to oil/air was a water temperature issue on hot days - an oil/water cooler adds something like 20-25% to the heat rejection needed from the water circuit and my water radiator (for packaging reasons) was a bit small. (I later found it was an aeration issue with the water circuit so could have continued with the oil/water exchanger had I realised.)

The big benefit from an oil/water exchanger is the oil heats up a lot quicker and is kept at a lot more stable temperature (an oil 'stat is unnecessary). For the use you describe (road / autosolo plus the odd track day), I'd go with the oil/water exchanger.

Tracks days then a cooler yes, Stats from what I was told by a good friend of mine was not to use, he never said why but he sells them.

Thanks all - the Exchanger and no cooler it is!

Will try and think of a quick-and-easy solution for swapping to a cooler for the odd track day..

Or try a track day and see if it's an issue ?

Does anyone have pics of how the coolant pipes are routed..?

Thanks

The cooler connects to a special top rad hose, Stew @ BakerBM reproduces it - http://www.bakerbm.com/205.php?data=schkit8v205 - scroll all the way down.

Thanks jack - it just looks like a spur; do you know if there's anything inside the top hose that forces recirculation..?

If you did want an excuse to fit one you can always make a plate to cover it in the winter etc. Stops the cooling effect really!

I've had a lot of trouble with plastic in coolant systems!
