Thinking Of Buying A 205. Storage And Cost?

Recommended Posts

Deacoz

Hi all,

I am really interested to buy a 205 GTI. My dad used to own one in the late 80's and I have been told how fun it is to drive. I don't own another car and would like to use it just for the summer/dry days. I am a bit concerned about storing the car outside though? Do any of you store yours outside over the winter? Are there any precautions you would recommend? Also, from my research so far the prices of a good condition 1.6 or 1.9, with less than 70-80k miles vary quite a bit. Could anyone suggest what sort of price seems reasonable?

Cheers

At least one of mine has lived outside most winters without issue, although they are used periodically during that time which helps.

Of course storing them inside would be preferable though, especially if you're paying the sort of premium that a good condition example with that sort of mileage typically attracts these days!

If I were looking, I wouldn't worry too much on the mileage, I'd be looking for a good solid shell with a minimum amount of rust as possible and something that had been cared for.

The last 205 I bought was solid, had 124K and was well looked after with lots of service receipts and old MOT's, it's not let me down for one day and it lives outside all year round (for now anyway), however I don't use it every day.

As far as prices go do a search on here, you'll find lots of info and opinions, good luck

I keep mine in a rented council garage, only a tenner a week, and when I decide not to insure it, I don't have the worry that it's not a main road.

Ask your local council for any garages that are up for rent, handy storage as well.

Mine lives under a sheltered carport and barely turns a wheel.

I've had mine for a year. Bought it with 131,500 miles on it and runs very well. I'd say if you're looking for a car to enjoy driving don't get too hung up on mileage, buy on evidence it has had money spent looking after it. Obviously, if you are buying to make money that changes.

I would suggest that from good quality no-work needed cars I have see advertised recently, difference between an under 70,000 miler and a 120,000 mile car is between paying £6,000 to £7,000 and £4,000 to £5,000.

Mine gets driven probably weekly, sometimes more, sometimes less. Lives outside on the road as I live in London.

I'd obviously like to keep it inside, but that's not an option and beyond a bit of leakiness that needs keeping an eye on, I think it lives fine outside.

Better to have one and keep it in the open air, that not have one because I have no garage.

Have considered getting a cover though.

I'd say spending good money on a quality cover would help. They can leak quite well, and if it does then at least you have the cover so you don't HAVE to repair immediately.

Thanks for the informative replies.

I got an insurance quote which came to £1,000 for the year (I am 24) so it's quite a high cost for not using the car daily. Yet to look into the cost for a shorter period of time.

I haven't seen many 205's in the gris magnum but they look so nice. Are they hard to find?

Mines on 185k miles and lived outside with me for 18 months or so. Now garaged after I moved. Found it VERY VERY frustrating for 12 months as it was hard to work on in the rain and leaked everwhere. Boot, doors, windows, everywhere. Once leaks were eliminated keeping it outside for the final 6 months wasnt too bad as most jobs were done as well.

Hi,

Please feel free to give us a try for insurance if you like. If you wanted to PM me some contact details I'd be happy to arrange for one of my quotes team to give you a call back.

Regards,

Dan.

I need to arrange a classic policy for the one I collect on Saturday but want it on limited mileage as cheap as possible.

1000 for a 24 year old seems pretty high so I'm guessing you haven't got many years of no claims. I'm nearly 19 and on my renewal I'm expecting it to be around the 900 mark with 3 years No claims.

I also drive my car every day, rain or shine but I wouldn't if I was buying a nice one I don't think.

As well as Greenlight I'd try RH Classics - mine costs £159 with all mods (incl cage) declared, breakdown cover, etc, but it does need to be garaged.

But I'd do some research before contacting Flux..

Try a Footman James classics policy. Mine is in London, parked on the road and before extras comes in at just over £200 for 5,000 miles a year. It was a lot cheaper than a MoneySupermarket sourced best price and you can even add drive to work on for £20 extra or so.
