Advice On Building A Custom 1.9 Be1 Box

Afternoon all

 

Looking for a bit more advice before I take the plunge and start buying bits to change the gearing in my 1.9 BE1. Firstly, thanks to welshpug for his advice to date!

 

So basically what I'm looking to achieve, after mucho reading on this forum, is a 4.4 final drive with the stock 1.9 gears. Not looking for a LSD at this time unfortunately (budget).

 

I've been offered a Xsara VTS box complete, or just the 4.4 ring and pinion from a BE3. Are these the same thing? Apparently my 3rd and 4th gears won't fit the shaft, so an additional donor would have to be sought - most likely a 206 GTi.

 

There is a 206 GTi gearbox for sale on eBay near to me, but are they generic?

 

Any advice would be much appreciated and please, speak to me like the naïve idiot that I am !!
