Exhaust With Middle Silencer Removed - Get A New One Or Not?

Hi folks,

 

My 1.9 GTI is pretty much standard and has an exhaust that's quite loud and sounds quite good when you are nipping about the place but booms a lot at 70 or more on the motorway.

 

Turns out it is because there is no centre silencer box on there.

 

Has anyone got any experience with having done this to their car?

 

Does it affect performance?

 

Is it possible to just put a centre box back on? Or should I just go for a new exhaust?

 

If I go for a new exhaust any recommendations? I am thinking a Walker one from my scouting around.

The engine was desined to run with the standard exhaust system, personally if the current system is ok I'd just weld in a box, but you can buy the system in pieces if needed.
