Speedline Vs Smr

Recommended Posts

I know this has been discussed around here but have one simple question. Did all 205/309's originally (factory) have speedlines fitted or where speedlines fitted onto a particular year ?

I have a 1992 Phase 2 309 gti and had a mix of speedlines / smr wheels on. Its all about looking for the needle in the haystack about what to put on it.

APpreciate any help

J

I have only owned the car 4 years but the car as far as I am aware and what other more experienced people have said when looking at it is completely original.

I do know that some later cars (92-93) had SMR from the factory as I've had a couple that were definitely still on their original wheels. I really couldn't say with certainty about other years. I'm sure Henry Yorke will be along shortly to advise :-) from memory there are two types of SMR (or two countries of origin) and I have a feeling there might be a third make, the name of which I cant recall.

thanks for all your comments. The 309 i own is quite genuine I must say. It is running 4 SMR and 1 Speedline. The speedline could be a result of it being replaced when it had frontal o/s damage.

Lemmers is the 3rd make of 1.9 alloy that I have seen . The Speedlines are the lightest of the trio which is why they are popular .

What brand of wheel they are doesn't bother me as long as they are all the same. However certainly the 1600 wheels have dates cast into them, mine all match.

is that the Belgian ones?..... if not i'm pretty sure there's a forth manufacturer for the 1.9's.

I didn't think any of the ctis came with the 1.9 alloys from factory ?

Yes , Lemmers were Belgian , have only ever seen one or two .

I would go for Speedlines everytime , thats an 11 lb saving on a set of 5 over SMR - given the choice of course .

I had half and half speedline and smr on my car and found another half and half set so I kept the 4 speedlines and sold the smr's. It might not be a massive difference but you can feel it when you pick them up

I thought of going for the smr's just because they where factory fitted in that period to try and keep its history going :)
