Advice Wanted For Spraying A 309 , Compressor Size , Paint Type Etc

Advice wanted for spraying a 309 , compressor size , paint type etc , have read up on this subject on the forum posts but would appreciate some help .

I am building a 309 at the moment , the car is currently dark red and will be sprayed white . I will be spraying it myself with the help of a couple of mates who have more experience than me which is just as well as like Manuel ' I know nothing '

The car is currently virtually a bare shell and will be painted inside and out . The bonnet and tailgate will be off the car and I intend spraying the underbonnet area , door hinge area and inner wings first then refit the front wings before spraying the entire car .

I have some dents which I hope to get removed by PDR with any other imperfections filled .

This work will be carried out in the spring once the weather has warmed up as I am working from a large unheated garage , this gives me some time to buy all the necessary equipment .I have no mains electric so will be running everything off generators .

1. What minimum size compressor should I buy - Hp/tank size - will probably get a Machine Mart/Clarke compressor and take advantage of one of their VAT free days .

2. Recommendations on a decent budget spray gun and gravity or siphon .

3. Epoxy primer seems to be the way to go , most of the car is ok original paint with the front end in rattle can primer or etch primer - will this suit epoxy primer .Is this suitable for a novice ?

4. I need to read up more on paint choice but cellulose seems to have had its day .

When I sprayed my 205.. I hired a diesel road tow compressor from a plant hire company.

Pretty cheap too iirc.

Good idea but I will not be able to do it all in one day , I want to prime it and give it a chance to dry before doing the engine bay . The wings will be fitted and I need the mastic to go off properly before painting .I have another 309 to paint in a year or two so will get my moneys worth out of all the equipment I have to buy .

Just got a discount card from Machinemart through the door , they are doing a VAT free promotion on the 3rd and 10th of January so I need to make up my mind by then .

I am looking at a couple of 3HP , 100 litre compressors , 14.5 cfm and 8 or 10 Bar at £323 or £430 and some larger ones with 3 HP and 14 cfm but with larger 150 or 200 litre tanks at up to £530 .The VAT will come off these prices though .

I could get a filter/regulator/ oiler at the same time , are the Clarke ones any good ?

Make sure you have a large enough electric power supply in your garage to run a 3hp motor.

I went down the second-hand route; bought a Clarke SE16C150 (single-phase 3hp, 14cfm, 150psi / 10 bar) complete with additional 150l slave tank, inline filters and driers for £250 delivered.

All I had to buy was a regulator (don't get an inline oiler if you're spraying) and hose, and I also upgraded the fittings to hi-flow to suit my impact wrench.

I'm hoping to do some spraying next year, so will be interested to read peoples' gun recommendations.
