Replacing Head Bolt Threads

Recommended Posts

benny205mi16

Hi,

I stripped the head bolt thread in my block,

I have now started to replace the thread, I have drilled out the old thread, but when tapping ready for the insert, the tap is to short to let me tap to the very bottom before I hit the block face with my tap wrench.

Does anybody know if I need the full depth?

Also would you replace all 10 threads while you were at it? I never got to full torque on the head bolts before this one stripped?

Thanks

I bought a 'V coil' kit a while ago ( from Ebay ) to replace a stripped head bolt thread in my 309 GTI block , the tap was just long enough to get to the bottom of the thread but I use a T type wrench which might give a few mm more depth .I use the longer 2.5 D inserts which fill the thread fully with a bit above and below and I would certainly want the tap to go all the way through .

I would not personally want to do all 10 threads unless I had to .
