Instrument Cluster Wiring Issue

Recommended Posts

jameswallace.

Okay so just trying to get my car back on the road now after being tinkered with for the last year.

The instrument cluster did have the battery light illuminated and nothing apart from the revs would read anything.

I then unplugged the green plug on the back. This is the third one along. This made everything work but it did however make the battery light and handbrake light come on.

I also have no indicators but my hazards work fine. Apart from only the left indicator light on the dash flashes

Any ideas on what could be up with it?

I assume it's down I something in the green plug circuit but I don't know what it includes? Anyone know if it includes the indicators??

Thanks

If the hazards work but indicators don't, that's often a fault with the hazard switch itself. I don't think the cluster itself can impact the actual functionality of the indicators.

My battery and brake light light up occasionally. Fiddling with the fuses sorts mine, it's one at the far end that has a dodgy connection but not sure which as I usually do this whilst moving.

Ahh okay Anthony. Ill unplug it and see if it changes anything and try to find a replacement .

Thanks Steve I'll check my fuses too :)

Okay I have tried removing the hazard switch which made no difference, changed the stalk again no difference and checked through the fuse board but still nothing!

Any other ideas what I could change?

James

The indicators will only work if you have a working hazard warning light switch connected, it forms part of the circuit.

You can take them apart and clean the contacts.

Only just had the time to look at this again! Changed hazard switch and indicator stalk for different ones but still no luck!

Is there a separate flasher unit for the indicators to the hazards?

Or anything else that I might be missing before I start looking for a new loom

Were the new hazard switch and indicator stalk both known to be working?

If the hazards work and the indicators don't it is almost certainly the hazard switch at fault.

The flasher unit is the same for both hazards and indicators, there really isn't much else that could be causing it if the hazards are working, it has to be the switch or the stalk.

Bad earths if cars been lying? Might explain strange behaviour-electricitys like water-it'll always go the easiest way. Did it all work before

Wiggle the wiring that goes into the hazard switch with the hazard switch connected to it while trying indicators, bloody annoying issue with connector for some reason as its so close to the heater behind it and there's hardly any room to manipulate it in and out the wires get kinked and often stressed causing it.

It stressed me to the point i fitted my stanley one piece hammer to it in the end and had to replace it

I'm not 100% if the switch is good but I would assume it was as I got it from a reputable person on here. Might be worth trying another one.

Il check all earths while I'm at it

Im gunna give the wiggle technique a go too and il let you know how I get on!

Thanks again guys

James

If the switch is the one that you got off me then I tested it prior to sending, so you'd be monumentally unlucky for it to have failed in the meantime with an identical fault to your old one.

I'm happy for you to post both to me and I'll test them for you to confirm whether one, both or neither is working.

I do agree though, normally your symptoms are a faulty switch.

Yeah that's the one. I trust that you would have tested it but it might eliminate a possible problem if you wouldn't mind testing both of them. I can't send them for a while though. I've moved to mid Wales you see, but the car is in sussex and I work full time so getting down to do anything is tricky! :(

Just want to get it sorted so I can drive it up here! Haha
