Circlip Plier Recommendations

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to add a decent pair of Circlip pliers to my toolbox. I've a 'set' with interchangeable heads - but they are terrible quality. Ideal for tiny clips, but not rusty hubs.

I'm looking for a pair to use predominantly with wheel bearing circlips. Therefore they must be big enough for the task in hand. For example a GTi6 hub bearing bore is around 80mm (1.9 the same if not very similar from memory) - so that gives me a guide.

I have found a pair that suit bore size 40-100mm which appear to be ideal. Am I on the right lines with my sizing or should I go a set larger? (Wasn't sure whether 100mm could limit me with other common bearing sizes or if that's not enough surplus margin to make light work of it). By going bigger thank necessary I perhaps limit the ability to use them for smaller jobs.

I've this pair on my short list:

Straight tip. Any benefit of bent ends or will straight do for most jobs?

Granted there will be a better £50/£100 pair that will last a lifetime - ideal for a mechanic who uses them on a weekly basis, but I can't see me using them very often so £20 was a reasonable price in my mind to pay out for a pair - but if there's a better brand than Knipex for the money please shout.

I have 2 (straight and 90 deg)of the halfords advanced range, they do everything I require. Except Vbar bushes on double decker busses but we have a set of bluepoint ratchet type ones for those.
