Christmas Presents You Actually Want This Year...

Recommended Posts

Henry Yorke

So it is coming up to that time where the wife / parents / inlaws ask you what you want for Christmas (and I have a birthday in December too) but I tend to buy most things I want anyway, however was thinking of maybe some tools etc.

I already have DA Polisher

I have an old Halfords socket set that has done me proud for 20 years

I have a tool chest

What are other people thinking are good presents to ask for? Categories are Under £10, £20, £40, £100. Please post links

Under £10

LED Telescopic Extendable Mirror - Perfect for looking down the back of the engine.

Sporting 205's Book - Good book, if a little dated in parts now

Under £20

Foam Garage Floor Mats - No more sore knees / backs of heads

Peugeot Sport Club Membership - Pays for itself with Pugfest discounts etc and you get colour 4 mags a year as well as an extensive Downloads area

Under £40

Ring Rechargable LED Inspection light - Won Autocar group test award

Curborough Track Day - Great intro to track days as well as a good social event on Easter Monday in the Midlands (Non-members +£10)

Under £100

Clarke Cordless Impact Wrench - Had some good reviews on here I think

I've rattled on about these enough, Irwin Nutgrips. Base set can be bought around £20 (5 sizes) and another £20 for the expansion set of an extra 5 sizes. Worth their weight in gold these!

A dremel is great, it does so much and there are so many attachments!

Anyone know of a decent soldering iron / crimpers / wire cutters combo I could ask for Xmas?

Feeling the GTI is gonna need some wiring work

If you're gonna be doing a lot of wiring, automatic wire strippers are handy, similar to these

these look a bargain too

not sure of the quality of either products btw

You get what you pay for, if that is not a good fit then you are no better off compared to a open end spanner. I have Snap On brake spanners and they have paid for themselves many times over in getting stubborn fittings undone without rounding them off.

For non-mechanics who don't use them everyday/week it's fine, the Draper stuff is usually good. I've used mines a lot recently and is a good fit and done the job well, where an open ender would have had no chance.

My last Draper brake spanner I threw in a skip as it was utter s*ite.

those ones are particularly poor, the draper expert stuff is much higher quality, you'll be hard pushed to beat a nice snapon spanner, much stiffer and deeper, far smoother finish too.

Iv got the Blue point/snap on badged version of this which only means it's the same kit but I paid more for it. http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Portasol-SP-1K-Super-Pro-125-Kit-Cordless-Gas-Soldering-Iron-or-SP-1-125-Iron-/381154847875?nav=SEARCH. it's brilliant, great for confined spaces.

I've got one of those small gas powered soldering iron silks, you may have seen it before? They are ideal as no extension cables needed etc! Just runs on the gas you use for lighters.

I do get on very well with my Portasol, i'd had various cheapo irons before that from the likes of draper and such and having a good quality one makes all the difference. I do quite a variety of soldering, from guitars and amps to car wiring looms and i can't imagine going back now!
