Gti6 Project - Which Box To Use?

Recommended Posts

Robbiedundy

Hi, have read through a heap of threads now and learnt what be1/be3 boxes are etc but not decided on which box I should use. I'm not very experienced with cars so I'm not sure if I want to take a gearbox apart to change the diff yet which ruled out the xsara vts box. Having limited right hand turning with the GTi6 box ruled it out. So correct me if I'm wrong but it would make sense to go for either the 1.6 or 1.9 GTi be3 box. Which would you guys recommend?

I think I have 1.6 GTi hubs (is there a way to tell the difference between them and 1.9's?) And I'm going to be using 309 driveshafts, is there a difference between base model and GTi ones? I need to order a new pair.

Cheers ????

Xsara vts box is a mix of both, longer than a 1.6 for motorway, closer than a 1.9 for spirited driving

Is changing the diff a difficult job? I probably have all the tools/resources just no knowledge

Very easy, just nuts and bolts.

Will have a look for a vts box, thanks.

Is there anything else I need to change to fit it? Brackets, cable, linkages?

Its no prob to change a diff or even a box, especially if not on a car, if you can use a socket set.

You'll need a BE3 box to rob brackets from. There is a thread somewhere where a few talked me through it.

I fitted a lightened flywheel when i changed my GTI6 from a 1.9 box to VTS.....with the box being a change for the better.

Only thing it may take you slightly longer to do than someone who's done it before.

You'll probably need

Loctite

Clutch arm bushes

BE3 clutch cable if you don't have one

Driveshaft seals

Gbox oil

I'd buy GrpN linkages too but not required

Personally i'd rather change a box than feck about with hubs/shafts/brakes etc

Which one of the 3, 1.6 1.9 and vts is better suited to track only work? Looking to replace my ab Motorsport box for something a little longer

What is the AB motorsport box?

I suspect the 1.6 is the best for track, however i think i read a 1.9 box with a different (4.4?) FD is meant to be the bees knees.

A box built by ab Motorsport, bit of a mix and match box. Brilliant on shorter circuits as very quick through the gears but in the interest of going to longer circuits next year a 115-120 top speed is going to be a little low

Just swap the final drive over, it sounds like a 4.4 so a swap to a 4.05 off a 1.6 is dead simple and keeps a working box.

A S16 or Mi16 box is better due to being stronger, the VTS box's suffer the same fate of GTi6 box's of having fine toothed gears, but a search will bring up everything you need for the swap
