A diesel starter motor will fit fine, but it's a bit overkill really for a 1.9 GTi engine.

If your original starter motor is tired, a good bet is to fit a late model XU starter from a late 90's 306 or 406, preferably a slimline Valeo unit. These work well and seem much more reliable than the original fat-bodied starters fitted to 205's originally.

My favourite starter 'upgrade/update' is an mitsubishi starter from a 206 GTi ... strong , light , and really reliable (+ it sounds much nicer than others too !)

That's interesting, one thing that concerns me with my build is the noise of the starter motor turning, it is really horrible. So much so that I replaced the reconditioned Valeo unit with a new Valeo unit and it was the same, so I'd resigned myself to that's the way it was.

Is the Mitsubishi starter from the 206 Gti a direct replacement on the D6B engine?

Just a centering dowel needs re-spacing , removing it from center bolt hole to the third one (or vice versa can't tell precisely now from the top of my head ?!) otherwise it's a straight fit bolts on fine on XU-s .

Paul,

My starter was sounding really horrible- I took it off and dismantled it- used a can of solvent cleaner on it- the amount of filth that came out was quite surprising- afterwards nice and quiet again.

If its noisy its worth a try for a couple of pounds.

Thanks for info, I'll keep an eye out for one, if cleaning it out does not work
