It provides the timing signal used by the ignition amp for spark (and in turn the ECU for fuel injection)

If it's damaged, you'll have no spark/injection (or perhaps intermittently if it's not completely broken but instead has a connection that makes/breaks by movement and vibration)

Ooo ok then my 205 misfires after 5000rpm sometimes and that wire looks poor when I fiddle with it the car stops or will restart. How hard are they too find new or good second hand ones?

You can find them second hand. I managed to when my was causing me some issues.

High rpm misfire could well be the ignition amp, as a common failure mode is to give a significant misfire usually around 4000-5000rpm.

As far as I'm aware they're not available new unless you find one in a dusty corner of a dealership somewhere as old stock, but they're not too bad to find second hand - the problem is that most second hand ones are often in quite poor shape. Sounds like yours is in poor shape and needs replacing anyway, but I've not personally seen one that gives a misfire only at one particular rpm range.

As Andy said, the dizzy signals cables can be found second hand, but many are in poor shape now as the typically break where the cable meets the dizzy end plug.

Fix it it's dead simple ! cut the cable end off (dizzy side) , solder two small spade connectors and connect onto the pick up coil ..

Black wire goes on top red on the bottom , third is a shieliding wire (ground on the dizzy base or left as it is ..)
