Fuel Cell Vs Standard Tank... Options?

Recommended Posts

Simmo

When I bought my GTI-6 converted 205 it came with a Bosch external pump, swirl pot and various Teflon lined hoses and Torques fittings that were originally installed in the engine bay but subsequently removed.

I want to re-install it all but in the rear of the car and feed the lines either in car or underneath, but am wondering whether to take the opportunity to do away with the standard tank and get a cell of some kind? If so what should I be looking at size-wise and where from?

Anyone else done this with their track 205s who can advise me...?

Sounds the same as my set up.

I've kept the oe fuel tank as it matins a low CoG, has enough fuel for decent drive (ring trips), and is nicely tucked out the way maintaining cabin space for general s*ite.

If I was short oval racing, or a dedicated race car I'd be more inclined to go for a fully fitted cell, but even then not for certain.

I have a fuel cell in my 309, If I was to build the car again I'd use the standard tank and a swirl pot ;)

You can get custom sizes. Just pick a capacity and start from there....

Thanks guys!

Yeah I like the idea of maintaining the low centre of gravity myself and retaining std tank and use std pump as a lift pump, however space isn't an issue as it is caged anyway so if a cell was recommended I'd go for that... but added cost so it all mounts up!

Is this a competition car? If it is there's various regs about having fuel cells/pipes/pumps in the car so I'd familiarise yourself with these before making a decision too. Some race series also have specific regs about modifying floor pans which you may need to do to get a fuel cell in nicely.

This is wise. Even if you put a fuel cell in the cabin, the fill and exit points are still exposed, meaning the driver's area still needs to be separated with a flame proof wall (in some racing categories). Keeping the original tank and adding a surge tank under the car overcomes these obstacles. Here's one I'm making at present which fits in the spare wheel area. It has additional capacity to get the overall fuel capacity to approx. 65L for an endurance race.

I've seen a few alloy tanks sat in the standard position, mostly half tanks on circuit and hillclimb cars.

Thanks again guys!

The car is just a road legal track car so MSA regs don't have to be adhered to... I'm not thinking of doing any competitive events... for the foreseeable future anyhow lol!
