Probably A Very Stupid Question.

Recommended Posts

Bobbafett

I noticed this from the get-go on my newer 205 and never asked but it's always bothered me so now I will.

I don't ever remember the gearbox on my old 205 having the flywheel? exposed like this down by the oil pan? And it looks like this bottom should be screwed to something?

Actual apologies if i've just looked very stupid.

There's meant to be a metal cover over that, held on by three bolts that you can see the corresponding holes for in the photo.

If you don't have one then I'm sure I've a few kicking around.

Should do I would have thought, as other XU/DW's with the later BE gearboxes still used a separate cover - I think it's only XU10 16v's that used the GTi-6/VTS type sump that also forms the cover.

(the yellow clutch fork bushes suggest it's an older BE 'box though, unless it's had an early fork fitted or the wrong bushes)

Actually ignore the vts box comment! Just noticed its missing the pointless chunk of metal hanging off the front!

I knew it wasn't right! The car is a 1989 1.9 but I don't think the gearbox or engine are original to the car (from what I hear). The box is stamped XU30 BE3 but no idea if it's a 1.6 or 1.9 box.

Whether it's a 1.6 or 1.9 gearbox isn't important - it's the engine, or specifically, whether it has the 1.9 spacer plate fitted between the block and the sump.

Ah right. Well i've ordered one from eBay so hopefully it will fit.

Right so I bought this flywheel cover:

But it clearly doesn't fit. The bolt holes are a good half inch and the lip nowhere near goes behind the edge of the pan. The distance between the flywheel and the edge of the pan is literally a couple of mm.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Wait, just did a google image search and saw this. This looks the same but reversed with the curve on the other side?? Says it's for a 306

you have a 1.6/non stiffener plate 1.9 cover, you need one for a 1.9 with a stiffener plate or get busy with a grinder.

Yep, as above - you've bought / been supplied the wrong one!

I'll need to double check later, but I would imagine that I've got the correct 1.9 (ie with a spacer plate) variant that you require.

A couple of years ago I bought the wrong one too, and just cut it down a bit.

If you cannot send the one you have bought back for a refund I was going to suggest the same, cut down what you have to make it fit.

I'd definitely prefer to fit the correct one if I can get hold of one. There isn't one on eBay currently.
