You are looking at Jan 87 to Mid 88 for a phase 1, 1.9 GTI. It depends what you want it for. If it is for historic rallying then there will be a few shells about, but the issue with phase 1's is that the dashes explode and the seats have seen more wear now. At least they were all galvanised, unlike early 105 BHP 1.6's.

The dashes explode? It would be as a weekend drive... I've only seen a few in original state and seem to fetch a lot...

The plastic is even more brittle and cheap than the later cars so it just breaks and falls apart. Hard to imagine given how easily the dash on the later cars disintegrate.

Right I get you now....so by that I take it there won't be so many around compleat then?

Nope. Quite common for parts of the dash to break. There is a D reg 1.9 for sale on Gumtree at the moment in Havant in Hampshire for £1600 which could be a good buy

Will have a look.... I've seen a couple on classic car site for around £7500 which I thought seemed a lot... But I suppose if there getting harder to find than the phase 2.... More sought after?

Well to give you an idea there was a very low mileage, immaculate phase 1 that was listed at £16,000 a year or so ago in London. Didn't sell for that but it wasn't far off.

That sort of price is extreme and very rare but does happen.

Bear in-mind that not many were made in comparison to phase 1.5 and 2 and a good example is very rare...most of the phase 1s I've seen in the last 2 years have been either poor condition or completely modified (usually distastefully).

Wow didn't think they would fetch for that much... Obviously it was low mileage as well.. Which bumped the price up.

Iv read somewhere aswel they only produced phase1s for around 8 months.

Not too bad, I have 3 at work currently, none for sale thou. Dash's are OK if looked after and not taken apart, but the base model's tend to fair allot better here for spares

1 is mine, other's are customer's cars. Mine being the 2nd known oldest with 72k from new I would be looking at 15k for when done as I'm not really selling it, will go well with my CTi so I'll have 2 of the earliest examples of both, just need to find a 1984 1.6 now

Kerridge's in Leiston had an A reg when I was last there, it needed restoration but looked surprisingly good.

Mid 88 Henry, you sure? My first 1.9 was a phase 1.5 and that was registered in January 1988. Though there's bound to have been some overlap.

I too have a 1.9 phase 1.5 that was built in Nov '87 and registered in Jan '88, Peugeot model phase crossovers are always a mess!

So it sounds like the actual production run for the Phase 1 could actually have been 8 months (or thereabouts, give or take a month or two), as Oliver suggests? I rather like the retro feel of my Phase 1 dash, and fortunately it's all still working/looking as it should! My car is the oldest known 1.9 Phase 1 in the UK (second week of Jan '87). Don't see many of them about these days. Would be interested to find out how many Phase 1 cars came to the UK, but doubt that information is available - I am only aware of total numbers (i.e. all GTIs). Taking a look on howmanyleft.co.uk it seems that there are 1700 road registered GTIs (1.6 and 1.9) in the UK. Interesting that the number dropped steadily each year through to 2014 (1.5k), but this year the number of registrations has gone up? Appreciate that the data on howmanyleft is never going to be too accurate. Miles have you been busy with the barn-find restorations this year?! Happy Friday and happy driving everyone

Unless I'm mis-reading it, isn't it the usual thing where cars are SORN over winter and thus don't show up as licensed?

Q1 2014 = 1455

Q2 2014 = 1690

Q3 2014 = 1695

Q4 2014 = 1473

Q1 2015 = 1447

Q2 2015 = 1674

That's the number of licensed (taxed) 205 GTi's over the last 18 months. As you can see, Q1 and Q2 this year are almost identical to the same period last year.

Of the 1473 205 GTi's licensed in Q4 2014, 138 (9.4%) of those were first registered 1984 through 1987 meaning that they'll be Phase 1's (with a few early Phase 1.5's).

Thanks Anthony, that's a helpful analysis and good point on the SORN. So as I understand it, the 138 cars first registered from '84 through to '87 will be both (Phase 1 mostly) 1.6 and 1.9 - if that's so, then what's a good guesstimate of how many of those are 1.9 Phase 1 cars registered in '87?

So out of that figure of 138 would you say there are more 1.6 than 1.9 as they produced 1.6 for longer?
