Revving / Overheating

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys

Seem to have an intermittent issue with the car overheating. The car doesn't seem to like being driven slow ;-)

Everything is ok if I'm driving over 40mph but sometimes when I slow down / crawl along in traffic, the engine starts to race / rev by itself to around 2k rpm in neutral and the oil pressure seems to drop and water temp starts rocketing causing the stop light to come on. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks

It sounds like the fan is faulty which is why it is overheating at low speed.

I've not taken notice before but does the oil pressure gauge normally go up and down with revs / speed?

Yes that's normal, the oil pump speeds up with the engine revs. It's also normal for the pressure to go down a bit as the oil heats up and gets thinner.

As above all normal, you are on about a 205 yes ?

I had the same symptoms of dancing revs on idle to 2k rpm but in my case it was due to low coolant level, there was a leak from a coolant pipe at the back of the engine. The vehicle did not overheat though and the fan works fine.
I clamped the pipe as a temporary measure and refilled the coolant back to normal level - the hunting revs issue immediately stopped.
