Which Wheel Hub Do I Have On This Gti

Recommended Posts

JR20516V

Here in OZ i have purchased a rare Euro 205 GTi and i am wondering which wheel hubs would this car have as i would like to upgrade the brakes to 306 items. Hopefully i dont have to change the hubs :{

It is an early 1988 with the 130hp motor rear discs, no power steer, pepperpot wheels. Grey and red striped interior.

Any info much appreciated.

check the offset on the front discs and size of the hub nut.

pepperpots are ford wheels btw, do you mean 1.6 wheels?

Thx for the reply Welshpug [as always :}

Yes, they are 1.6 wheels in the UK ...we call them Pepperpots over here.

Regarding the hubs....how do i measure the offset on the front discs? I know how to measure offset on wheels but have never done disc brakes before.

I thought it would be a fairly straight answer for this "common in the UK" model but seems not so :{

Correct me if i am wrong but in the UK cars doesn't it go something like this.........1.6 GTI = requires hubs from a base model 205 so as to upgrade the brakes.

1.9 GTI = Does not require change of hubs as it has the same offset as the lower models anyways.

I have been wrong before though LOL

You're on the right lines but with the age of them you cannot assume!

All sorted WP i think.

In short the UK 1.9 can only have the same hub and carrier as the base model thus i can direct fit early 306 calipers and discs to it...hassle free! [no need to fit base model hubs ]

This article explains it clearly.......

Because a base model hub is the same offset as the larger bearing 1.9 hub, any "big brake" upgrade mentioned can also be used on your base model 205, however it is worth bearing in mind the additional weight, both unsprung and rotating, of such upgrades and their effect on suspension efficiency, and whether you do need such leverage or would a decent friction material be more than up to the task (typically, they certainly would be)

The larger bearing hub found on the 1.9 has 25 splines, and an 24x1.5 hub nut, typically 35mm across flats, original type have a castellated cover and an R-clip, however there are aftermarket shafts with staked nuts as well.
