Cambelt Cutting Through Plastic Covers

Recommended Posts

timoth123

Anyone any idea why this might be happening?

Its cut right through next to the water pump and almost through on the other side of it.

The belt that was fitted was 17mm thick, that correct?

any play in your tensioner? if there is it may force the belt closer to the casings...

Did you have the bolt fitted to the hole on the right hand side of your photo? This holds the plastic cover back against the water pump to stop it rubbing the belt. Otherwise sometimes these covers are warped now from age/heat which causes them not to sit properly flat.

Could be that the pump gasket is too thick.

Hmm, never thought of that. What thickness should it be?

The gasket came from a Payen gasket kit.

That'll be fine, its either warped as they do or something else it twisting it possibly.

Basically Paul, im a complete idiot!! During the engine build i screwed up big time. Ive got the crankshaft caps mixed up with the knackered block. Its wrecked the crankshaft and obviously destroyed the shells. To add to my idiotness even more. I attached the caps i need for this block to the old block then scrapped it!!!!!

Thats why i called the other day actually, to see if you had a spare block with matching caps!!

Next time check the running clearances with plastigauge when building. You would have known that wasn't right before it went anywhere near the car.

Sorry to hear that,

I've got several blocks here, your welcome to them, the best is the second one that I stripped the head bolt. I'll dig a few out and have a look at them.

How much crank float did you have? Could have been pulling your belt into the covers. unfortunate mistake that you have made with the engine, but luckily you learn from mistakes! Hope the next build goes without issue for you

The original peugeot pump gasket is paper thin. The payen ones tend to be thicker iirc.

I highly doubt it was caused by the gasket, have you checked the end float on the crank?

Did you fit the thrust bearings? That looks like there wasn't enough clearance and its picked up/lack of lubrication. Did it turn easily by hand when assembling? Did you build it up with oil and graphite?

Are the other plastics ok? If its only round the pump then my money is on the pump gasket. Had this problem myself and it was a payen gasket set.

Yup just the plastic around the pump. Literally only on either side of the pump gear.
