Claiming Abandoned Cars

Recommended Posts

Ryan

I know there was a big thread about it a few years ago, but I can't find it.

A family friend has seen a Jensen Interceptor rotting away on the driveway of an abandoned house. The house has been empty and boarded up for at least 18 months, and the car is in a bit of a state - out in the open, covered in two inches of bird s*it and sitting on four mouldy flat tyres. It hasn't been touched for 18 months, probably a lot longer based on it's condition.

I know he can try and apply for the V5, but what would be the first port of call if he wanted to try and claim it in as legal way as possible? Local council? Police? DVLA?

I think you can pay to get the land registry checked, and see who owns the property. I definitely wouldn't want to go direct to DVLA etc - even if it were possible just to register it in your name. It still belongs to someone - may have sentimental value, and definitely has a monetary value.

I know there's the whole keeper vs owner thing to be aware of. From looking around it seems you can never really be the owner without a receipt or proof of sale. But I've at least come up with a couple of options to try and get in touch with the owner/keeper. I know you can pay a fee and get the last known keeper's name and address from the DVLA. Land registry is a good call too, thanks.

Or ask a neighbour if they have contact details for owners of the house?

You cannot just apply for the v5. You will need to trace the owners really. Its more difficult that you don't physically have the car in your possession but if you try to just take it it will most likely be theft.

Hardly abandoned if on private property, mind your own business and f*** off is what I'd say to you :)
