205 Rally Beast With A Wankel Engine

Recommended Posts

SkyQuake

The topic of rally cars was bounced around at work today, and a name was thrown out of a chap who has a reputation for putting unusual engines in his rally prepared 205, Vincent Foucart.

Did a little googling and it turns out he's built an utterly nutty Group B 205 with a triple rotor Wankel engine in it! Couldn't find any reference to it on here, so I thought I'd post it up!

There's a couple of good youtube videos here and here. The thing sounds fantastic!

Cheers,

I think I prefered the BMW engine but this must be so much lighter!

I think his W16 was more of a technical masterpiece, 4x cbr 600 heads and blocks mated together!!

Foucart has been mentioned on here a few times.

The V16 was fun too.

Also has some of those funny wonky brake discs, not sure where they came from

New engine next year, back to Honda's.

Front end and arches are 306, he does have another car with the 205 front end on.

It's hidden there but there's actually a rather large sliding variable-length trumpet setup under the carbon inlet, that's why that 'airbox' portion is so large. The inlet is about half again that length at low rpms.

There's a second set of stand-off injectors spraying into the bellmouths too.

It's been a tad slippy in France this year. (205 about halfway through):

I've always wondered about 4 wheel drive rotary engined cars because they're not the best of engines for torque and I'd have thought that would have been preferential in off road rally stuff, even their RX7 group B entry was RWD.

Does anyone have any more information about the drivetrain or even more photos? The variable length intakes must be an idea straight from the 787B Le Mans Car :P, I'm guessing it's also peripheral port?

He's not the first triple rotor rally car I've seen though, but I am waiting for the quad rotor rally car :D

I've got a photo of them somewhere but where is another matter.
Rotaries make plenty of torque over a broad range, they make great rally engines. The 'lack of torque' stuff is more from the unwashed public who expect a turbo kick.

As for drivetrain, Sadev sequential up front, billet diffs front and rear based on 7-series cores.

My brothers brother in law races against this in rally's in France and I've seen it in the flesh. It sounds even better when you're about 10ft from it.

This is the brother in laws car :)

That's totally awesome. The noise it makes; it's more like an R/C car!

The off road field, with the ultra 4's and Safari cars, not the rally stage (athough that would be fun :D )
