Squeal/whine From Cambelt Area Tu3S

Recommended Posts

Hello, I've noticed quite a distinct squealing whine kind of noise from the cambelt area. Doesn't seem to be all the time just here and there. I'm thinking possibly one of the following :

Belt too tight

Water pump shagged

tensioner shagged

Maybe the alternator but it doesn't seem to be that far forward

I've only heard this type of noise before on another tu3s about 500 miles before the belt snapped. I'd much prefer this belt not to snap!

Any guesses before I start replacing parts?

Cheers

John

Are you sure it is the cambelt? Had a nut fall off the alternator bracket which caused that belt to squeal.

The TU belt is so easy to do, get it in pieces and find the problem.

It could be the alternator, it's hard to tell.

I had the cambelt off not long ago, and the tensioner seemed fine, but I regrettably didn't replace it or the water pump.

Better whip it off and replace those two, check the alternator bracket and see what happens after that

Had the whine on my gti thought it was cambelt but it was the alternator starting to whine, the way i found this out was to take alternator belt and start it up and see if it has stopped . I changed alternator and whine gone.
