205 Gti 1.9 Front Brake Clunk/rattle/movement

Recommended Posts

James Cornell

I have undertaken most of the usual repairs over the last couple of years on my 1.9 and there is barely anything that has not been touched (I am not exaggerating) but it recently failed on a rear brake imbalance and I decided to replace ALL of the rigid brake lines for copper ones and replace all of the flexies along the way.

All brakes worked perfectly after the change and the car passed the MOT, however now I get a clunk when I reverse for the first time and brake and subsequently the same clunk the first time you move forwards and brake.

I took the wheels off last night and (thankfully) all of the caliper bracket and floating bolts were tight and there is no movement at all on the rear calipers, however if you hold the floating part from the front caliper it will rock backward and forward a few mill (on the sliding pin)...my question is

Have i bled the brakes incorrectly and this is why the front pads have this movement?

I bled all four calipers on my own with a bottle and clear pipe method (hand pumping the pedal slowly with the pipe visible and putting a brick on the pedal before tightening the bleed nipples and slowly releasing the brick)

If it is not this...what has happened? The brakes are the std Girling 1.9 calipers and the pads are EBC Ultimax and are <1000 miles old

Are pads securely fitted? Check the caliper locating bolts as well

Sliders worn? I had a very similar issue with rear calipers due to worn sliders, they'd rattle terribly as you drove along and go completely silent if braking.

It just seems odd that there is movement in both...maybe it is normal wear and tear

I've bought numerous things from Brakes international and never had any issues including slider kits, pistons, seals, complete calipers. I'd recommend them.

Maybe worth stripping things down and having a look at the condition of everything before you spend any money though.

Another vote for brakes int here. Give them a call they are very helpful and good to deal with.

I ordered front slider pins from them and they were wrong

At the time they couldn't offer a solution so refunded me
