Wiring Query

Morning all,

I am in the process of swapping out the loom in my 205 as im not happy with it. I have found a lot of useful guides on the site which should see me through it however, I have a 2.0 mi16 from a 306 s16 in my car and wanted to check that I am right to be following the various mi16 wiring conversion guide.

In short, are the wire numbers/colours/purposes the same on my s16 loom than that of a loom from an mi16? I can't find anything to suggest otherwise but wanted to check before the soldering iron comes out!!

Cheers

Amir

No, the wiring guide for a 1.9 Mi16 won't be the same as a 306 sourced 2.0 Mi16.

The 205 side connections are all the same, but the wiring for the engine loom side will be completely different.

Indeed, it's going to be closer (but certainly not the same!) from a wiring point of view to an early 306 GTi-6 when it comes to converting it for 205 use than a 405 1.9 Mi16.

Ok so,

The GTI6 wiring guide on the site may be useful then? It of anyone else wants to shout up with any useful points that would be great!

Cheers

Had another search and struggling to find anything. What I need is a guide of what wire does what on the s16 loom to connect the the corresponding wires connected to be brown plugs on the 205.

Autodata has the basic wiring diagram and ECU pinouts, from which you should be able to work out most of the connections if you've got a multimeter and a bit of common sense.

Autodata wiring diagrams and pinouts

If you've already got a converted but poorly done loom, it should be easy enough to work out what's what as whilst the wiring numbers/colours might be different, the connections should largely be the same for the sensors, alternator, starter, relay, ECU etc so you can easily ID them by buzzing them through with a multimeter.

As Anthony said, if you actually have the engine and loom there you can figure pretty much all of it with a multimeter buzzing through from plug to multiplug.

The autodata diagrams don't show the ancillaries, but these are easy enough to trace through or make a separate loom.

Ok,

Thanks for you help. I managed to pick up an S16 wiring loom (unconverted) and an mi16 engine loom ready converted pretty cheap so my idea was to create a new loom. Having said that I only have a few specific issues:

1:oil pressure gauge doesn't read

2:oil temp gauge doesn't read

3:rev counter doesn't read (although I have a fix for this)

4:reverse light doesn't work

So maybe I am going a bit too far!

Perhaps I am best to put together a seperate loom for the a ancillaries as you say?

Confused ????

Those issues should all be pretty easy to resolve, and if the rest of the loom is good it seems somewhat overkill making a new loom just for that!

  • Oil pressure gauge is just a single wire (#30 IIRC) from the larger underdash multiplug to the oil pressure gauge sender
  • Oil temp gauge (#30A IIRC) is just a single wire from the larger underdash multiplug to the oil temp sender on the sump
  • Rev counter is either a case of using the output pin on the ECU and modifying the rev counter, or buying/making a "tacho adapter" module to combine the outputs from the coils to drive the unmodified standard 205 rev counter. The wiring will be slightly different depending how you do it, but essentially it's wire 112 (grey) from the smaller underdash multiplug to either the ECU or to the tacho adapter.
  • Reverse light is just two wires (#52 brown and #53 purple) from the larger underdash multiplug to the reverse light switch.
Hope that helps. Edited by Anthony

I guess your right! When you buy something that someone else has put together and your not totally happy with it, you kind of want make it your own and know it's right.

Well that's great advice in any case and a lot less time consuming! Cheers!
