Inertia Switch Question.

Recommended Posts

boldy205

I'm having problems starting my Gti6 converted 205. I am wondering if all Gti6 looms come with an inertia switch plug?

If so I cannot seem to find one on mine!

Thanks.

Matt

Isn't it common to chop out the inertia switch and join the wires up, so you may not have one..

This may be the case then. It's a gti6 loom Miles converted to run in the 205.

As James says, it's common to remove the inertia switch when converting the looms for 205 use as the switches can be a bit over-sensitive and trigger on potholes, clipping curbs on track and the like.

If it is present, it'll be near the ECU with a bulky looking 2-pin plug and two thick white (IIRC) wires.

I have found a few pics of them to confirm identity. Will take a look tomorrow.

Another question is, I have a plug which according to pin outs on the ECU should go to a key pad, presumably for an immobiliser. Would this prevent the engine from firing if it's not connected to anything?

The inertia switch T's off near ECU and relay part of loom, black oval plug with two thick white wires as anthony says. Short/solder them out if you're not gonna use inertia switch.

Does your fuel pump prime?

Is the imobiliser wires on a separate round plug? You can disregard them if your ECU has been unlocked correctly.

Yes the fuel pump does prime, the immobiliser wires are on a square plug. A bit more investigation when I get home.

If the fuel pump primes i'm fairly certain the inertia switch can't be the issue, if you can't find it then it must've been chopped out and the wires joined together.

As Sam said - if the fuel pump primes, the inertia switch isn't to blame (it cuts power to the fuel pump).

It also suggests that you've got power to the injection relay and that the ECU is working to a degree (although a locked ECU will still prime the fuel pump)

Just got back from the garage. I found it magically started to run on numbers 3 and 4. Further investigation found no fuel in 1st 2. Going to whip the fuel rail out tomorrow and test injectors. ( No 1 being at flywheel end)

Very strange!

Thanks for all the ideas so far!

didn't think an engine could run on two cylinders?

I have 2 sooted up plugs and two totally clean plugs, so I guess so?!

Presumably because it's running on 3 and 4, so pistons are 'opposite ' each other?!

might be a blown HG between 1 and 2.

might be a blown HG between 1 and 2.

Shouldn't be as the engine was previously running on cars before the injected supercharged conversion.

As I said before its a fuel problem hopefully.

that wont have any bearing at all on it.

though I have seen issues with SC conversions and wiring due to some modifications required, I don't recall them being injector related though, usually TPS & MAP.

Just for a bit of comfort, (cos when WP mentions the HG problem your heart sinks), on my first engine my HG had been blowing between 1&2 at the closest point on the cylinders.

But, i've been in a SC conversion, gawd knows how these engines handle the punishment...., if/when i ever do it i'd make sure 110% the engine is capable of it.

Your're gonna have so much fun annihilating everything! hope you've got the rest of the car set up to use it to it's full extent.

I have know the ignition driver's to fail in the ECU before and the ECU's lock for no reason, No cut off as they are cr*p on any fast road car, trip out allot

All of this was working perfectly when removed from the car, it must be something simple.

Indeed it was Paul. After a bit of research, thinking and tinkering, it was the injectors not firing as they were sticking, a gentile tap with a spanner and bingo, she's running!!! Happy days!

Many thanks for all the ideas. It's now a days work to fit bumper, interior etc and test drive!

They have been off the engine for at least 4 months, will get them checked over peace of mind.

I've only heard of injectors sticking when they've been cleaned then stored without being used, it's important to get some petrol in them ASAP following cleaning.
