White-Blueish Smoke Leaving The Exhaust (Silencer) ...

Recommended Posts

Dandu

Hello everybody,

I own a 205 CTi (with a XU10J2TE, 2l turbo), that recently decided to spit out some white-blueish smoke. Oil is burned for sure. The strange thing is, that it happens every now and then. Sporadically. Sometimes the car operates fine, sometimes the cars in the daily traffic behind me get covered in clouds.

The engine has been overhauled completely (6 years and 50.000km ago). Every possible seal had been replaced. Two months ago the turbo charger has been substituted. The former was seriously broken (turbine wheel hopped off) and a used spare one was installed. Is there any chance the trouble might correlate with that?

Best regards, Dandu

Does it smoke when idling or under load?

I've experienced it twice so far. Always while idling. Maybe it does not occur under load. Best regards, Dandu

It's not something I've experienced myself but some people have reported smoking at idle with the 2.0 turbo because their exhaust has insufficient backpressure.

e.g.

All of a sudden? I mean, it was working for years. To be precise: 5 years. Hmmm, I can't imagine the exhaust system (lack of backpressure) to be responsible for the smoking. Bye, Dandu P.S. Much thanks for reasoning, jackherer!

Hi Dandu,

It sounds like this seems to have happened since the change of turbo.I would be thinking along those lines to.

Sounds like the turbo you have may have done some hard miles or not had many oil changes in it's life.

I know you had a rebuild done Dandu but just as a thought, maybe valve stem oil seals.

Some of the ones that come in gasket sets are of a lower quality material than OEM which looses it's pliabillity much sooner.I only mention it because I've come accross it a few times myself.

All the best

O.T.

This is not specific to your vehicle but I had a very similar experience with a previous turbo car, it started to randomly belch blue smoke on idle and sometime when pulling away. This happened on several occasions but it wasn't a common occurance. I thought the worst but fortunately I discovered the cause of the intermittant blue smoke was a gunked PCV and breather pipework. Once this was fixed it never happened again.

is it possible there is oil still in the exhaust from the turbo failure and still burning off ?

Much thanks for your precious thoughts / ideas!

@opticaltrigger: Everybody I was asking over the last days told me at first, that the valve stem oil seals might be broken. Today I had a conversation with a befriended mechanic, who explained to me, that these seals typically reveal its beginning malfunction while changing the load of the engine, f.e. while shifting gears. I had another friend of mine today, who accompanied me and specifically focused on this (while driving behind). Nothing.

@ams: Sorry for the inconvenience, but what do you mean with pcv? The valve which regulates the pressure going to the waste gate of the turbo charger?

@mikeyd: Difficult to say. I can not imagine it, cause there is no explanation for the irregular (accidental) burning. Shouldn't the exhaust get rid of the oil continuously?

While driving today I experienced the smoke only once or twice. Slightly. The war broke loose the very exact moment I entered my low level garage. After reaching the end of the slope, the silencer morphed into a cigarette. I stopped the engine, restarted it and the effect was even worse - thick blueish smoke leaving the exhaust. Strange. The tilt of the car must influence the oil consumption. But how?

Best regards, Dandu

Ive had this engine in my daily for the last ten years, smoking of this nature at any time was down to the seal in the turbo releasing oil into the exhaust turbine.

Its prone to it, thrash the engine hard, turn engine off without letting it cool down, oil still in the manifold bakes hard like coal due to the heat, over time it builds up until eventually the oil has nowhere to go and pushes the seal out hydraulically which then leaks the oil out into exhaust which then burns.

Only happens at idle because there is no turbo pressure in the exhaust to blow the oil back in

Just my thought as ive had this problem twice now and never done any work on it internally. Just replaced the turbo twice.

Hey Andy,

seems like I have to replace the charger again. Which would be the third time in the previous 5 years (of using the engine). Maybe it's wise to go for an aftermarket charger instead. But this is another discussion, I don't feel like kicking off. ;)

Much thanks! I'll keep you informed. Bye, Dandu

If you have to go to the trouble of removing the turbo, you might as well go to the trouble of refurbishing it rather than replacing it.

Yyou can't replace the metal thats worn on the spindle but a second hand one can be just as worn anyway but at least you will have new seals and bearings and the opportunity to clean it out while its off the car.

Refurd kit will be far cheaper than another turbo charger too, even a second hand one.

Ebay Link

Bought 2 of these in the past, its from china but price is spot on.

Hello Andy,

I already have a spare charger. ;) And I feel like bringing it to a company, who is specialised in refurbishing turbo chargers, at first. After that I'll initiate the replacement. That's it.

Much thanks for the idea (and support) to refurbish it myself, but this is something I definitely lack of capabilities. ;)

Hopefully the problem is solved afterwards.

Best regards, Dandu

I dont know about that, its harder to remove the turbo than it is to strip it down lol but if your not confident then best to get it done for you :)
