Boot Floor - Replace Or Patch?

Recommended Posts

Robbiedundy

So I put my car away to get painted, which also included a little welding.. mainly patches in the boot floor. He obviously wasn't used to welding on thin Peugeot metal and burnt a heap of holes, very bad penetration in the welds that actually held.. basically made it worse than when it went there. I never noticed untill now because it's covered in filler and stonechip.

Anyway, I've wire-wheeled all the bad bits back to bare metal -IMAG0026_zpsvb2195fp.jpg

Whats the best way to go about fixing it? Replace the whole boot floor or patch it?

I'm not worried about it being a huge job replacing the whole boot if that is the only way to do it properly.

Advice please ????

Personally I would get some sections of good boot floor out of a scrapper and weld patches in. Replacing the entire floor is a big job and uneccessary in my opinion from that picture, and that is assuming you can even get hold of one.

A lot of it looks solid. I'd repair it as it'd be less work.

Out of interest, have you got a picture before the "repair" was carried out?

What's the best way about cutting out the patch in the bottom left hand as its ontop of a rail underneath?

cut the entire panel out of a scrap car if you find one in one piece, that way its just 4 long cuts. take a spot drill bit too and your drill

Sorry but it's not, there's the front and rear crossmembers to think about as well.

Cutting a full floor is a pain , unless you can roll the shell over etc

As Tom says the cross members come into play

I would patch it

cut the member out too then it doesnt matter how rough it is in a scrap car you can do neat patches later on

Haven't got any pictures of before it was 'repaired' really, you can see in this pic where I initially took all the original paint off with a wire wheel to show all the rust then primed it for him, holes were very minimal..

I was going to replace the boot floor in my old dimma shell but after trying to remove a complete floor from a car at scrapyard it would be very hard to refit due to where some of the spot welds are located so i ended up just patching and dressing welds so you could not see repair.
