Rotten Egg Stink

Recommended Posts

Hi

Iv been having this issue since the past few months but never got round addressing it.

When my 205 mi16 is driven/revved above around 4k, there is a sort of a rotten egg smell coming from the car. It is hard to tell where it is coming from, possibly from the exhaust and possibly from the engine bay itself.

This smell is similar to the head gasket type smell. However, there is no sign of a coolant loss, the radiator is new, so is the head gasket and all engine coolant pipes, rear engine black coolant flange etc. All these were done last summer.

I did more than 1000 miles last weekend (3 tanks of fuel) and the car did not use any water nor overheat or anything. However the smell still persists. I always use shell optimax 100.

There is no oil leak, all engine bay wiring is in good condition and not melting or anything.

Battery is 1 year old. Alternator is 6 months old. There is no cat in this car just a stainless exhaust.

Does anybody know what this can be as is slightly worrying.

Thanks

Check the battery and the alternator voltage.

An overcharging battery can give off a pronounced sulphurous smell.

The alternator is a brand new (not recon) Mitsubishi unit installed a few months ago. I will check the voltage and report back.

Thank you

Quick question - will a broken alternator excitor wire cause overcharging or not?

No, at least, no in my experience.

Usually you'll find that the alternator won't charge initially after starting the engine until you've revved the engine sufficiently for the alternator to self-excite and begin charging.

Slo

I bought a 55 plate astra in 2009, it was a non runner because the coil pack had failed and through trying to start it the previous owner had ruined the cat.

When I got the car i fitted a new coilpack and removed the exhaust and smashed out all the brick inside that had collapsed and blocked up the hole internally.

After that the car had the eggsact same rotten egg stink so I would say thats the eggsact (sorry lol) same scenario and your lambda is working properly if youve got one fitted.

I had a clutch that did that once but if you've not had a new clutch fitted at any point then you could probably rule that out
