Diesel 5Th Drop Straight Into A 1.6 Be3?

As my BE3 is being refurbed I want to drop a longer 5th into it. Will a diesel 5th drop straight in? Exactly what am I looking for, what's that cog called (apart from '5th'!)

 

Does anyone have one on good condition - or any suggestions where I can get one, maybe?

 

Incidentally the gearbox outfit who stripped it down told me the problem with 2/3rd occasional crunches wasn't the usual synchromesh problem, something to do with a broken clip of some sort (at last some good news).

 

I think that was what I found stuck to the magnet as mentioned in another gearbox thread - so if you have crunches it might not be an expensive synchro issue.

yes you can fit a longer 5th, but it will be horrible!

 

you would be better off getting a xsara vts gearbox to fit, or using a 1.9 gti gearbox

That does depend what engine it's attached to though Dan - a 1.9 'box on a 1.6 engine is pretty ill-suited for example.

It's not simple, The 5th gear from a derv or Mi are the same but the input shafts are different sizes so you need the right bush and the gear from the right box

Thanks for the replies - it's actually for a 1.6 box on a 1.9 - so if it's not a straight swap, which box do I need the 5th cog and bush from?

Just fit a xsara vts box tbh, for the hassle and on the shelf availability...
