Pump Upgrade Help

Recommended Posts

bobdylan_55

Hi all

Is anybody able to point me in the right direction here. I think I am running on the limit of the standard fuel pump and want to upgrade it. Id rather stay away from fitting a swirl pot due to extra cost. I will at some point fit a swirl pot but for now I just want to upgrade the intank pump.

The car in question is a mark 1 - 309 gti. I am unsure which pump if any are going to be a direct replacement? If none, which would be easiest to make fit.

I have been looking at the walbro 255 or the itp246? But think these are more suited to mk2s?

Thanks again

bobby

Have you tried a search, there have been a couple of very good threads on this in the past couple of months?

Yep looked at loads including yours but they all seem to be stating various things such as inconsistency in housing and such. Further I have just popped out to remove the pump and its completely different to any of the pics I have seen so far. There is no housing as such, just a rubber casing. Looks a fair bit easier to swap out though so thats good news :)

The 309's are vastly different, more like the later car's, 306 etc with the screw top fitting, Give Glencoe a call as they can sort something out

Is it ok to run the pump with just the original membrane filter and not use the filter included from walbro? As per the pics. Ta

Yes, but expect it to stop picking fuel up at about half a tank! Pump inlet needs to be much lower.

Aa yep good point. I will sort that. But as far as the filtration goes the membrane filter is good enough?

The original pump in mine has a very fine mesh over the end of it too?

A bit like this

I would have thought the membrane filter is much more efficient but having said that there was a small amount of deposit inside it which is what got me thinking if it alone was good enough. I dont think I have much option to be honest though.
