Brake And Suspension Setup Dependant On Engine?

Recommended Posts

layton1985

I have been doing a lot of reading but find so many different bits of info (some contradictory) that I don't know where to start, first off I have read that using brembo calipers you need base model or 1.9 hubs with c5 disks, then I read that the offset is different causing one pad to be closer to the disk than the other? I also read that 306 hubs should be used but then I read that the 306 hubs alter the camber in a bad not good way ( top of tyre leaning out?) With these hubs xantia 288x 28mm disks should be used?

Regards the suspension I was wondering about spring rates I have read that people use 240lbs springs and others use lighter springs as I read further on to see what kind of engine they might have I found they had either gti6 or mi16,reason I am searching this information is because I have just recently started a v6 conversion and I would like to try and keep as much of the handling as possible ( I know I should stick to a lighter engine if handling was my main concern, it isn't hence v6) but I thought if I used heavier duty springs surely the car should handle as well as it did as the suspension has compensated for the extra weight? Any info will be greatly appreciated, more of a discussion as I am sure other people may wonder the same thing, and not many people know how v6 205 actually handles?

Thought I might ad I may be using the Ford mondeo mk3 brake bar set up with larger servo and mc for the brakes, I really don't want to be cutting out the cam belt cover, I want it to be as professional as possible.

I did start a v6 conversion a while ago but only got as far as mounting the engine in the bay before having to rush the car out of a friends unit, in the end I put a 2.0 turbo engine in

I'm not sure about spring rates for a V6 but I do know that Brembo calipers on a 205 is a pain in the butt if you want to retain 15" wheels. Almost impossible, unless you use wheel spacers.

I'd personally not fit anything bigger than 266mm for a road setup. I always upgrade the brake material first as this sorts it enough for me.

The best way with suspension would be to move to a front coilover and get the car on the scales so ride height and spring rate can be custom altered to give the best handling characteristics possible.

What is that process called? (Regards weighing the car for suspension set up) I'd like to try and find somewhere that does that if I can afford it? Sounds like something only companies can afford.

yes I've heard brembos can be a pain, so much conflicting information on the Internet, I will just have to suckered it and see but that way it can cost a fortune especially with disks costing £70 a pair ( cheap if your just buying 1 pair), I am currently working on a 309 gti also which is in the bodyshop now stripped that will have a 206 gti 180 put in it, nice and light, that should be a cracking build as they are really good handling anyway and should be even better with suspension upgrades, I want both cars to be comfortable to drive, not rattling my teeth out but good handling.

Corner weighting. There's a few places around Manchester that do it according to Google.

I bought an ADA corner weight gauge so I could do it myself. It's quite easy to do. Does it make a difference ? I don't really know other than to say when I built my old car, I didn't corner weight it but by fluke, it turned out to be spot on. It handled brilliantly. The new car I did corner weight (hence buying the gauge) - and it handles brilliantly. I don't feel inclined to deliberately screw up the corner weights to find out if it does make a difference ...
