Cooling Upgrades

Recommended Posts

I had my first track day in my 1.9 yesterday at Goodwood and it was fantastic. Car didn't miss a beat all day.

Being a very warm day yesterday I was worried of the car over heating so I ran the heater on hot when I was driving to just try and help get heat out of the engine.

Do people run slim line fans on a switch so the fan can be permanently running when on track or am I just being to cautious?

Thanks

a good standard radiator is sufficient for an engine with over double the power of a standard one.

if it runs too hot on the move then there's something not right, fan;s only need to come on when stationary.

What state is the rad in ? I once had a cooling problem on a Chevette - rad looked fine from the back (which you could see easily) - but from the front, most of the wigglestrips had fallen out !!!

There are no issues with the cooling. It was just a hot day with the car getting a lot of abuse. Radiator is probably the original one but is in good condition. Only had the heater one just to be on the safe side. Was just seeing if people do upgrade the cooling fans/radiator but looks like they don't

Nope as said perfectly good cooling system . Used it on my 8V and Mi/GTi 6 on track/ road no worries. Not sure if people like to use a oil cooler on a Standard 8V on track if not already fitted?

When moving on the track the fan will hold up air flow if anything.

Ive run with no fans on track and was fine.

Unless its getting hot dont worry as the stock system is more than capable.

My 1.9 often has the fan running on a hot day whilst moving- I'm not sure there's anything wrong with it - its been doing it since I bought it 5 years ago.

The radiator is new (well 18 months old now) and its had a couple of coolant changes since it came into my possession. Mei are you saying there's something up with a standard car that has a fan running in hot weather - if so can you shed some light ?

My 1.6 in 1992 used to do exactly the same thing as well which makes me think its normal. (bearing in mind it was only 3 years old then with 40K on the clock).

Depends what you mean by "moving".

If you've in slow moving traffic then the chances are that the temperature will creep up and the slow-speed fan come on, particularly if you've just been driving at prolonged high revs so the oil temperature is comparatively high. This isn't surprising if you think about it as at low speeds you've not got much airflow over the radiator.

If you're in free-flowing traffic over 30mph or so, then really the temperature needle shouldn't raise off the point where the thermostat opens (usually somewhere between a third and halfway on the gauge, depending on 'stat fitted).

I think mine sits just beyond the vertical position on a hot day in slow traffic - it never goes beyond that point even if I'm stopped in a traffic jam so I guess its ok

On my 205 it has a twin fan cradle with one fan installed, so I fitted another fan in the other side of the cradle and put that one on a switch, so one is controlled normally by the radiator switch and the other by me as and when I see fit.
