Using A Timing Light/gun

Recommended Posts

johnnyboy666

A little bit embarrassing, but I have never used a timing light, and I need a bit of guidance on where to be pointing it at!

I'm guessing that it needs to be pointing at the flywheel, if that's the case, does the little plastic cover come off for this purpose?

And does the flywheel (TU3S/K2A) already have a mark that I'm looking for or do I need to mark off TDC with tip-ex or something like that?

Cheers!

John

Yes the plastic cover needs to come off (if you have one that is)

Tipex on the timing marks is a must in my opinion lol as I couldn't see them, makes it a hell of a lot easier.

Obviously connect to cylinder no 1 lead. Then point it at the flywheel and away you go

Cheers, so the marks should be already there, it's just a case of making them more visible?

Personally i have marked up tdc on the auxillary pulleys with a corresponding mark on the adjacent covers and worked from there. The plastic cover has very limited scope so can be difficult to view on a fully assembled engine. If you can be bothered then make a small angled pointer to attach to cambelt covers and use the auxillary pulley more accuratley

Probably a stupid question, but cylinder one is at the cam pulley end isn't it?

Shiiiit, in that case, I may well have timed the cam incorrectly D: unless the cam is at the same position on cylinder one and four at the same time?

Looks like I'll need to re-do the cam timing before I do the ignition timing then :( Good job I turned the engine over by hand to check there was no contact before I started it.

Although, It seemed to run really well considering it was timed to the wrong cylinder?
