Door / Body Seals - Nightmare

Recommended Posts

rikky

As I've had my car stripped right back to bare shell for paint, I've got the black weather strip / water drain seals which go around the door shut on my floor.

These are the adhesive ones which stick to the top of the door shut and are fixed with foam tape and a plastic rivet at the B pillar area.

(part numbers 902102 / 902103)

I've been trying to clean them up for refitting but it's basically turning into a nightmare, and I'm wondering what other people have done or used.

I've got rid of the thick and thin foam from the backs of them but it's left a tiny bit of glue residue on there. It's literally impossible to remove any more! I've had petrol on there, dunked them in thinners, had heat on there, picked at them with an arsenal of tools and scrapers but not having much joy.

Any sort of double sided sticky tape, even the 3m VHB Body moulding tape, won't take to them and as such I'm stuck

Anyone shed any light? I don't want to be buying new ones really (if they're even still available) as they're likely to be mega money

Might have to think about using something different then, maybe from a specialist seal supplier or something from another model, will have a look around. Problem with these is now they've been dunked and attacked in various stages I'm thinking one might be distorted slightly now

I cleaned mine with some pre clean / panel wipe and a scraper. It was impossible to get it all off but clean enough to refit.

I used some good quality double sided tape but noticed it had started to lift in the corners. I ended up peeling it back slightly and putting in some PU adhesive to hold it, seems to have worked out OK. As I recall it may have had a thin bead of adhesive alongside the tape in the first place.

As a last resort you could always bond it on fully with the PU adhesive, messy though and doubtful it would ever come off without destroying it completely.

I persevered like you but used scotch brite and brake cleaner to rough up any remaining glue so that a good quality adhesive double sided trim tape stuck to it and didn't lift.

Thanks all, I've just been out again after not wanting to be defeated, and with a good scrub with a scotch-brite and the brake cleaner it's worked a treat

Ironically the 3m proper bodytape VHB stuff hasn't worked, but the £2.99 Maplin special has :)
